Notes

[edit]

There are over 5,000,000 Catholics in Australia. How can it be the "second largest" denomination? — Preceding unsigned comment added by 114.77.228.121 (talk) 11:09, 21 February 2014 (UTC)[reply]

I'm not really sure that the stuff on Gay Ordination belongs in the article, but so long as it's there it had better be up-to-date and accurate. Lots more to do here. Andrewa 02:01, 30 Aug 2003 (UTC)

  • I agree that the homosexual ordination stuff may be out of place (or at least disproportionate) for the encylopaedia. I have added an introductory para to put it in some context. Linz 00:17, 26 Jan 2005 (UTC)

Dave Andrews is a wonderful man, but he is connected to the Baptist church, not the Uniting Church —Preceding unsigned comment added by 60.240.158.53 (talk) 04:05, 8 November 2010 (UTC)[reply]

ACT?

[edit]

Should the list of Synods include ACT?

I'm not sure of the precise wording - is it the NSW/ACT Synod (like UnitingCare NSW.ACT) or should ACT be included in brackets after NSW Synod? Does anyone know the correct protocol?

The official title of the NSW Synod is "NSW Synod". As a resident of Canberra for much of my life this did (and probably still does) annoy me a little. --entheos 06:10, 2 Mar 2005 (UTC)

[edit]

I have used NSW-ACT Synod at all my workshops, etc... and all presentations I do for the Synod for the last few years. People often seek to "officially correct" me, but as soon as I explain that I am endeavouring to be INCLUSIVE, they are happy to adopt the new terminology. At this rate, I am expecting the change to come in by 'common usge' (a legal term) within the next 5 years. Correct protocol is to try to do the right thing. In this case, the right thing is be inclusive. I have ended up with most Psat Moderators agreeing, so I reckon it's OK. - --AmeliaKB

The title of the NSW Synod was changed, at the Synod's request, to "The Synod of New South Wales and the ACT", by the Assembly Standing Committee on 29th March, 2008. --Linzc —Preceding undated comment added 12:27, 12 February 2011 (UTC).[reply]

Question EMU / RA as confessing

[edit]

They certainly see themselves this way but I think it is fairer to say that rather than that they are. When looked at against the article on the Confessing Church. Worthwhile cosidering this question from their own web pages.

Keeping gays out of ministry can be argued but it does not compare to resistance to Nazism. I think the new phraseology is appropriate Paul foord 06:26, 15 May 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Just looked up Confessing Movement - will revert Paul foord 12:50, 15 May 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Uniquely Australian?

[edit]

The UCA is a uniquely Australian denomination and seeks to share Jesus in authentic "Aussie" ways.

That sounds like unsupported speculation.

A few paragraphs later:

The UCA has a strongly felt and argued sense of social justice.

And those individuals who are against social justice are un-Australian? Andjam 11:51, 29 October 2005 (UTC)[reply]

australian values, just like all values are invented. if you're american but are a nazi, does that mean you are un-american? it's simply rehtoric —Preceding unsigned comment added by 140.159.4.1 (talkcontribs)

New category: Reformed church theological colleges and seminaries

[edit]

I have made a new category:

Category:Reformed church theological colleges and seminaries

If you are editing a Uniting Church college article, please consider adding it to the category (or one of its sub-categories) by adding:

[[Category:Reformed church theological colleges and seminaries]]

at the bottom of the article. Delete the parent Category:Seminaries and theological colleges unless the college also has a strong non-Reformed churches affiliation. --Hroðulf (or Hrothulf) (Talk) 10:09, 29 August 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Re-wording Gay Ordination section

[edit]

I have been through the section previously entitled "Ordination of Homosexuals" and re-worded the direct and clinical labels of "homosexuals" to the more timely and less cold "gay and lesbian". When the word "homosexuals" is used by a church organisation, it is usually followed by either "agenda" or "propoganda", and rarely now is the word "homosexual" used in a way that is inclusive, warm, or fair-minded. Lenky (talk) 04:45, 9 February 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Perhaps more to the point, official statements of Uniting Church tend to use phrases like "gay and lesbian people". -- De Guerre (talk) 00:19, 10 February 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Well, that too. :) -- Lenky (talk) 03:09, 10 February 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Proposed Methodist work group

[edit]

There is now a proposal for a WikiProject group, possibly initially a subproject of Wikipedia:WikiProject Christianity, to deal with articles relating to the Methodist churches at Wikipedia:WikiProject Council/Proposals#Methodism. Anyone interested in taking part in such a group should indicate their interest there. Thank you. John Carter (talk) 15:26, 6 March 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Interconciliar

[edit]

The UCA's polity is not as was previously stated, 'Presbyterian'. While it has some features of Presbyterian polity, the place of elders in decision making has always been far less prominent than in Presbyterian polity, and in recent times this is even more the case. Further, the UCA's polity is not a set of HIERARCHICAL councils, but inter-related councils, each with their own areas of responsibility, but decidedly non-hierarchical. The UCA's polity is probably best described as 'interconciliar'. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Linzc (talkcontribs) 12:44, 12 February 2011 (UTC)[reply]

What do members of the UCA call themselves?

[edit]

C of E - I am an Anglican. Baptist - I am a Baptist. UCA - I am a ??? (Unionist?) — Preceding unsigned comment added by 211.29.232.118 (talk) 22:23, 27 September 2012 (UTC)[reply]

We usually say 'Uniting', as in "I am Uniting". Sometimes "I am UCA" or "I am a Uniting Church Christian" if there's a need to be more specific. 220.239.197.223 (talk) 09:52, 31 May 2016 (UTC)[reply]

Membership

[edit]

Can someone confirm or provide a source for the claimed "membership" of 243,000. If not, it should be removed from both the text and the info box.Johncoz (talk) 11:03, 22 February 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Historic Composers

[edit]

There are several significant historic Australian musical composers from denominations that joined UCA. Copyright on these has expired. This makes the music suitable for use without permission or payment, consequently they form the 'traditional' musical culture of UCA. Copies of most published scores are preserved in Australian libraries.

  • Ernest Edwin Mitchell (1860-1930) Methodist
  • Edwin Fowles [1] Methodist
  • William Robert Knox [2] Presbytarian

I am sure there are many talented UCA performers capable of doing them justice.Tradimus (talk) 17:40, 17 February 2018 (UTC)[reply]

References

Help finding reference

[edit]

Can someone find a reference for the claim that "The UCA is the largest non-government provider of community and health services in Australia"? If the source for that claim is found in source [1] ("Submission to the Review of the ACNC Legislation") the link is broken. Hypershock (talk) 12:48, 11 November 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Improper placement of images of church building's.

[edit]

There are four images of churches at the beginning of the Organisation section and one in the Congregations subsection. Such positioning is not appropriate (not relevant to the preceding heading).

Should there be separate section - eg Property or Buildings? If not, what change would rectify this problem?
