Not "alternative"

[edit]

There's nothing "alternative" about Gang Starr. They are rap in hits purest form. Obviously written by a backpacker. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 24.130.14.181 (talk) 09:49, 5 February 2005 (UTC)[reply]

OK, i'll take that out, i was just adding to someone else's writing, and didn't really notice it. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Krackpipe (talkcontribs) 17:53, 16 April 2005 (UTC)[reply]
Huh? Excuse me, gangsta, but its exactly these "backpackers" that keep hiphop alive nowadays. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 80.134.154.140 (talk) 22:09, 26 August 2005 (UTC)[reply]

50 Cent

How did 50 Cent found Gang Starr in 1987, he would have been 12 years old.80.41.40.221 21:37, 26 December 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Context is unclear

[edit]

The context of this quote is unclear: "If I confirm it, then it’s official. If I don’t confirm it, then we still together."

Full quote including question:

"A while ago, you had said Gang Starr was on hiatus because of a situation with Virgin. But in an allhiphop.com interview, Guru said you guys weren’t working together at all anymore. Have you spoken to him about that?"

"Nah, but this is what I always say: Gang Starr is forever, number one. Neither of us can ever leave Gang Starr. He can’t leave and I can’t leave. And when the time is definitely right, no matter what he’s saying, there will be another album in effect. We don’t know when that time will be, but I will never confirm that we are broken up. And if I confirm it, then it’s official. If I don’t confirm it, then we still together. Believe that. That’s on the really real. Gang Starr is still together. Don’t let AllHipHop.com get you all messed up. It’s good."

The quote in the wikipedia article doesn't make clear what "it" is; whether this is the breaking up of the group, or the opposite.

I don't get it

[edit]

Can somebody please explain why I get warnings? First of all I deleted a links that doesn't exsists anymore, and I get a warning for that by some morron who put the links back in the info page...How stupid is that? Warning for help :s

Second, I made a whole new trackology page with every production of DJ Premier. I put it on the page with the other links and I get another warning that I can't put links for promotial use and so on. Wtf is this retarded person thinking? I put a lot of effort for the people who want to see wich tracks are produced by DJ Premier and he's thinking about addvertisments. Check this site, you won't find any commercial stuff, second, if you look at the info sheet you see that you can't make any money out of my site.

If I saw 'Kariteh' in front of me I would slap him in the face like he slap his girlfriend, that's for sure...I mean, how stupid is it...If you help wiki you get a warning, pure bullshit — Preceding unsigned comment added by 81.164.143.74 (talk) 13:06, 3 June 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Fair use rationale for Image:GangStarrDailyOperation.jpg

[edit]

Image:GangStarrDailyOperation.jpg is being used on this article. I notice the image page specifies that the image is being used under fair use but there is no explanation or rationale as to why its use in Wikipedia articles constitutes fair use. In addition to the boilerplate fair use template, you must also write out on the image description page a specific explanation or rationale for why using this image in each article is consistent with fair use.

Please go to the image description page and edit it to include a fair use rationale. Using one of the templates at Wikipedia:Fair use rationale guideline is an easy way to insure that your image is in compliance with Wikipedia policy, but remember that you must complete the template. Do not simply insert a blank template on an image page.

If there is other other fair use media, consider checking that you have specified the fair use rationale on the other images used on this page. Note that any fair use images uploaded after 4 May, 2006, and lacking such an explanation will be deleted one week after they have been uploaded, as described on criteria for speedy deletion. If you have any questions please ask them at the Media copyright questions page. Thank you.BetacommandBot 10:40, 4 June 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Vandalism? Envy? Stupidity?

[edit]

It seems the whole Gang Starr page contents have been replaced by 'Slum Brothers' information? There probably is a reason for this, but I am tempted to use the 'undo' option.

145.8.104.65 09:48, 24 August 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Introducing untrue information to an article, or removing an article's entire contents and replacing it with something else, are pretty clear vandalism. I already reverted. Don't be afraid to be bold and revert -- we all have the button. :) spazure (contribs) (review) 09:50, 24 August 2007 (UTC)[reply]
Also, I don't find it coincidence that User:Reginald_dempsey is the name of the producer for some of the Slum Brothers' work. spazure (contribs) (review) 09:53, 24 August 2007 (UTC)[reply]
Right now I am using internet through a company proxy. I don't want to get my company involved in any problems. Would have 'undone' when I got home. 145.8.104.65 11:38, 24 August 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Gang Starr songs in media

[edit]

The song "Now you're mine" is featured in one of CSI: New York episodes (I don't know which one exactly). Song is played almost from its beginning, when camera is pointed at the NY building when from birds-eye view. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 80.238.64.28 (talk) 10:08, 24 September 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Moving Trivia to Talk Page

[edit]

I'm moving the Use of Gang Starr songs in media section to this page. Please feel free to add these back to the article in a way that conforms to WP:TRIV. Here it is:

Several of Gang Starr's songs have been featured in video games. The first was "Just To Get A Rep" on Thrasher: Skate and Destroy, followed by "Mass Appeal" on Tony Hawk's Pro Skater 4, "Moment of Truth" on Dave Mirra Freestyle BMX 2, "B.Y.S" on Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas, "Now You're Mine" on Skate, "Code of the Streets" on 25 to Life, "Full Clip" on True Crime:NYC, "Who's Gonna Take The Weight" on Grand Theft Auto: IV, and "Step Into The Arena" in Skate 2.

The song "Above The Clouds" was featured in Steve Olson's part in Shorty's Skateboard video "Fulfill The Dream".

The song "Work" was featured on season 1 of the HBO original series, Entourage.

The song "Code of the Streets" was featured in the 2007 film Freedom Writers.

The song "Full Clip" is featured between show segments of The Jim Rome Show, a nationally syndicated sports talk show.

A portion of the song "Just to Get a Rep" is featured in an ESPN promotional ad for "ESPN College Gameday".

The song "Jazz Thing" is part of the soundtrack for Mo' Better Blues. [1]

The song "Zonin'" is featured in the graffiti movie Stockholm Subway Stories.

In 1998 the group collaborated with fellow New York rappers M.O.P. on a track called "1/2 & 1/2" for the soundtrack to Blade.

The song "Full Clip" is featured in Josh Kalis' part of the skateboarding video, the DC Video.

A song by the group, "Battle" was used in the film 8 Mile in 2002.

"Above the Clouds" was used in the soundtrack for NBA 08.

"Just to Get a Rep" is slated to appear on DJ Hero and will be mashed up with I Want You Back by the Jackson 5. The songs are mixed by DJ Yoda

"Now You're Mine" is featured in CSI:NY "Heroes" episode. [2]

Deleting the list of names

[edit]

I'm going to delete the list of followers and list of influences. As far as I can tell, they just link to the allmusic mainpage and answers.com, the latter of which, as far as I can tell, is just Wikipedia + banner ads. Not only that, the list of followers and influences seems...incomplete at best and misguided at worst. It's DJ Premier--his record collection could fill a warehouse, and who hasn't been influenced by DJ Premier? Bobcat (talk) 17:18, 15 February 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Death of GURU and Vandalism

[edit]

I am not an editor, but with the recent death of GURU this page is getting vandalized repeatedly and needs to be edited and locked temporarily until the scene cools off a little bit. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 207.229.161.30 (talk) 15:33, 20 April 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Details of guru's death

[edit]

Guru's nephew speaks about his health status and Solar's attempts to insulate the ailing man from contact with his family

Several members of Keith's family have released statements indicating that he never woke up from his coma. The myth that he did represents a subversive attempt by Solar to give legitimacy to his falsified letter. 137.22.112.224 (talk) 17:57, 21 April 2010 (UTC)[reply]

forced?

[edit]

"He forced DJ Premier to join Gang Starr..." huh? How did he "force" him? I think a little elaboration is in order, or this should be changed to something more neutral. 70.72.16.171 (talk) 23:25, 9 July 2013 (UTC)[reply]

More Context, Please!

[edit]

I got drawn to this page to find out more about Gang Starr. I'm not 'into' hip-hop of this era in part because I was living far far far away from music and the internet in the 1980s and 1990s. So help out the newbies like me - what is so great about Gang Starr? How did they influence music? What were their innovations? What were some of the things about their music that makes you go "ah"? I know this is obvious to fans, but this isn't a fan page so help the rest of us out! Kagillogly (talk) 21:24, 5 December 2016 (UTC)[reply]

Origin in Brooklyn

[edit]

The article is not about the group that Guru formed in Boston, which was non-notable. He kept the name but made an entirely different group with Premier in Brooklyn a few years later. This is non-controversial and is covered here as a different iteration of the group, meaning the prior "Gang Starr" was a different group and hence not the subject of this article. Guru being from Massachusetts and Premier from Texas have nothing to do with their partnership having been formed in New York, which is the correct origin of them as a duo operating under this name. JesseRafe (talk) 20:21, 8 January 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Change to years active, alongside changing information in the page.

[edit]

Gang Starr released a single "Family and Loyalty" Today, on September 20th, 2019. From https://twitter.com/REALDJPREMIER/status/1175067597806678017 . Also available on most music streaming platforms. This is produced by DJ Premier under the Gang Starr name as shown in the credits in most streaming platforms. With new music coming out, shouldn't the wikipedia page be in present tense when talking about Gang Starr, and their years active should be to 2019? Cha chingo (talk) 15:34, 20 September 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Hi, and thank you for making an account (assuming this was the prior IP). But please note that releasing previously recorded material, especially from an artist long since deceased, does not make an artist or group still active. JesseRafe (talk) 18:28, 20 September 2019 (UTC)[reply]
