ROC

[edit]

About the Note Jiang removed Whether or not Republic of China is a country is controversial, please see Political status of Taiwan for more.

Quote Jiang: "it exists, whether in legitimate form or not"

I agree that it exist, that's why I only added the note instead of removing it from country altogether. I added the note because of it's controversial status, which readers should know. --Hunter 10:27, 2 May 2005 (UTC)[reply]

disambiguations provide possible choices. we dont insist on one. the controversy does not need to be explained for people looking for certain pages to find their way--Jiang 10:48, 2 May 2005 (UTC)[reply]
OK, if you posted this as reason I may not have raised the question. --Hunter 11:01, 2 May 2005 (UTC)[reply]
I'm deleting most of the "see-also"s relating to Taiwan/ROC. I don't think the disambiguation page is the place for those links, and the explanation attached to "ROC" is long enough as it is. If a user is interested in finding out more about it, they can simply go to the ROC link. --Sumple (Talk) 12:09, 31 May 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Chyna

[edit]

I have no interest in professional wrestling, but on a disambiguation page, everything goes. This will never be a featured article candidate; it exists only to clear up confusion. If someone tries to find the wrestler by spelling "China" as it is most frequently spelled, I don't think a disambiguation note is too radical for anyone. If someone objects to the manner in which I am putting it back in, feel free to change the formatting, but the content itself is perfectly relevant. Thanks, BDD 23:20, 6 May 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Fine China

[edit]

How many people typing in Fine China is expecting to find a band, rather than porcelain? Perhaps the name of the band page should be changed to "Fine China (band)"? Oh and that badn page has serious npov problems: Their previous album "You Make Me Hate Music" was so well received by fans and critics alike that it guarantees them a permanent place in the hearts and the record shelves of pop lovers everywhere. Sure. --Sumple (Talk) 11:03, 30 June 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Works for me. --Usgnus 14:53, 30 June 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Subtopic 'Music'

[edit]

Humm, why aren't China (album), Fine China (band) and china cymbal listed under the subtopic 'music'? I think I'll reorder the lists for that part. Bwa ha ha. 130.231.89.99 13:33, 5 December 2006 (UTC) Matti Nuortio, Oulu, Finland[reply]

RFC on China and PROC

[edit]

A request is underway about the naming of articles. One of the suggestions is to move this dab page to China, and rename the current China article. 74.15.105.205 (talk) 04:49, 15 May 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Move discussion in progress

[edit]

There is a move discussion in progress on Talk:China which affects this page. Please participate on that page and not in this talk page section. Thank you. —RM bot 17:45, 6 July 2011 (UTC)[reply]

It seems that the discussion resulted in the move of People's Republic of China to China. I wonder what happened to the article that was at China previously? I cannot even find the discussion. -- Petri Krohn (talk) 05:37, 14 March 2012 (UTC)[reply]
I see it was moved to Chinese civilization and has since disappeared into a tiny dab page. This definitely is a prime example of how to get rid of POV crap! -- Petri Krohn (talk) 05:47, 14 March 2012 (UTC)[reply]
The discussion is now here: Talk:China/Archive 14, with some more of it here: Talk:Chinese civilization/Archive 24, Talk:Chinese civilization/Archive 25. -- Petri Krohn (talk) 06:08, 14 March 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Style issues

[edit]

Can I ask all editors to familiarise themselves with the manual of style for disambiguation pages, which lays out clear guidelines for pages like this. In particular the purpose of a disambiguation page is to link to pages with related names in the simplest and clearest way possible: every entry should be for one article and should have one link; the link should usually be at the start of the line, after which there only needs to be enough text to identify the article.--JohnBlackburnewordsdeeds 23:55, 25 November 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Requested move 11 December 2016

[edit]
The following is a closed discussion of a requested move. Please do not modify it. Subsequent comments should be made in a new section on the talk page. Editors desiring to contest the closing decision should consider a move review. No further edits should be made to this section.

The result of the move request was: WP:SNOW close and procedural close. The "WP:SNOW close" is due to the discussion below, and the "procedural close" is because of the ongoing move discussion at Talk:China#Requested move 11 December 2016 that has a conflict with this proposal since 1) the nominator there seems to be advocating a different outcome for China than what is proposed here, and 2) there is no immediate proof that the nominators of the two discussions are the same editor, so merging the two discussions would be confusing, considering the differentiating opinions regarding China. Also, the request at Talk:China#Requested move 11 December 2016 was posted before this request, so thus why the request in this section would be the one to close in the event of a procedural conflict. China (disambiguation)China – This disambiguation page should be renamed to "China" because it consists of the territories ruled by the PRC (Mainland, Hong Kong, Macau) and governed by the ROC (Taiwan, Penghu, Kinmen and Matsu) 135.23.144.153 (talk) 03:00, 11 December 2016 (UTC)[reply]

Any additional comments:

well, it's not a vote, and clearly the above comments did not consider the problem at all. PRC is the "primary topic" in the context of current events. It is not the primary topic historically speaking. Not all our articles are about current events. That's not even the main problem though. On top of the ill-advised move (for years and years, the articles were titled properly), the "China" article was just blanked. We have no equivalent to Q29520 (de:China) now. The blanked article now resides here. This is the actual primary topic for "China". I don't really care about titling and disambiguation too much here, but it is hard to defend that the "China" page was simply blanked and replaced by the PRC page. --dab (𒁳) 06:44, 13 December 2016 (UTC)[reply]

How is it hard to defend? Your suggestion would be like making "Egyptian culture" the target for "Egypt" or "Greek culture" the target for "Greece". The PRC is China just as Egypt is Egypt and Greece is Greece. --Khajidha (talk) 12:15, 26 December 2016 (UTC)[reply]
This was discussed at great length years ago. The decision then was that China is the common name of the country and so that is where the article should go, with a redirect from its old name the People’s Republic of China. The discussions are linked in a section above in case you want to review them. I can’t see anything has changed since those discussions.
As for Wikidata, ignore it. It’s great for cataloging some sorts of things – people, settlements, books – which are concrete, distinct, with easy to identify common features. But it simply cannot deal with more abstract topics which can go by different names, or be grouped differently, and that includes the countries and their histories. It is utterly useless when it comes to handling naming disputes, as they by the nature are particular to a wiki and language. The country is commonly called 'China' in English, but that only means that’s what the article should be called on this wiki. It does not apply to any other wiki in a different language with different policies.--JohnBlackburnewordsdeeds 13:11, 26 December 2016 (UTC)[reply]
There has to be compliance check. It may violate applicable laws when China only refers to PRC. OrangeLark64 (talk) 04:18, 16 March 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Use Official Name

[edit]

Based on the following facts: No country named Taiwan. But there's a regime called it self The Republic of China. No country named mainland China. But there's a country called The People's Republic of China. I suggest to rename "Taiwan" as "Republic of China", rename "Mainland China" as "People's Republic of China". — Preceding unsigned comment added by Yuansa (talkcontribs) 23:10, 8 May 2020 (UTC)[reply]

We use the names that are generally used in English. --Khajidha (talk) 14:02, 22 June 2020 (UTC)[reply]
