Wikipedia:Categories for discussion/Log/Today

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

See Wikipedia:Categories for deletion policies for the official rules of this page, and how to do cleanup.

Deletion of a category may mean that the articles and images in it are directly put in its parent category, or that another subdivision of the parent category is made. If they are already members of more suitable categories, it may also mean that they become a member of one category less.

How to use this page

[edit]
  1. Know if the category you are looking at needs deleting (or to be created). If it is a "red link" and has no articles or subcategories, then it is already deleted (more likely, it was never really created in the first place), and does not need to be listed here.
  2. Read and understand Wikipedia:Categorization before using this page. Nominate categories that violate policies here, or are misspelled, mis-capitalized, redundant/need to be merged, not NPOV, small without potential for growth, or are generally bad ideas. (See also Wikipedia:Naming conventions and Wikipedia:Manual of Style.)
  3. Please read the Wikipedia:Categorization of people policy if nominating or voting on a people-related category.
  4. Unless the category to be deleted is non-controversial – vandalism or a duplicate, for example – please do not depopulate the category (remove the tags from articles) before the community has made a decision.
  5. Add {{cfd}} to the category page for deletion. (If you are recommending that the category be renamed, you may also add a note giving the suggested new name.) This will add a message to it, and also put the page you are nominating into Category:Categories for deletion. It's important to do this to help alert people who are watching or browsing the category.
    1. Alternately, use the rename template like this: {{cfr|newname}}
    2. If you are concerned with a stub category, make sure to inform the WikiProject Stub sorting
  6. Add new deletion candidates under the appropriate day near the top of this page.
    1. Alternatively, if the category is a candidate for speedy renaming (see Wikipedia:Category renaming), add it to the speedy category at the bottom.
  7. Make sure you add a colon (:) in the link to the category being listed, like [[:Category:Foo]]. This makes the category link a hard link which can be seen on the page (and avoids putting this page into the category you are nominating).
  8. Sign any listing or vote you make by typing ~~~~ after your text.
  9. Link both categories to delete and categories to merge into. Failure to do this will delay consideration of your suggestion.

Special notes

[edit]

Some categories may be listed in Category:Categories for deletion but accidently not listed here.

NEW NOMINATIONS

[edit]

Characters in Greek mythology by location

[edit]
More categories
Nominator's rationale: I have added these categories to Category:Mythological people by nationality (most as subcats of Category:Mythological Greek people‎), and I think the category tree would be better served using the same naming structure as Category:Legendary people by nationality and Category:Fictional people by nationality. It would open the scope to mythological people from any mythology not just Greek. Mclay1 (talk) 13:29, 13 August 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Oppose — consistency is good, but we should never seek it at the expense of utility. The proposed change loses a lot of clarity — few readers will know what an “Aegenitan” is, but the “Greek mythology” in the current category helps them. On the inclusion of non-Greek mythology, the only relevant category would be Roman mythology, and there’s nothing stopping a page being in two categories if that is helpful. Category:Mirai (band)

[edit]
Nominator's rationale: Eponymous category for a band, with no other content but the eponym. As always, bands can have a dedicated category if they have a significant volume of spinoff content besides just their main article, but do not automatically get one just to hold their main article and nothing else -- but there's absolutely nothing else that can be filed here, as even their albums don't have separate articles at all. Bearcat (talk) 12:16, 13 August 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Category:NUMTOT Wikipedians

[edit]
Nominator's rationale: Overly narrow user category per WP:USERCATNO. Mclay1 (talk) 11:52, 13 August 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Category:Black MIDI enthusiasts

Nominator's rationale: Overly narrow user category per WP:USERCATNO. Mclay1 (talk) 11:46, 13 August 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Category:Beijing Municipal Committee of the Chinese Communist Party

[edit]
Nominator's rationale: Three eponymous categories for political committees, each only containing the eponym with no other content at all. As always, everything that exists does not automatically get its own eponymous category just to recursively contain itself -- these would be fine if there were at least four or five spinoff articles to file in any of them besides the eponyms, but are not needed for just one thing. Bearcat (talk) 11:24, 13 August 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Is it possible that given 2 days I could quickly write these entries to keep these categorized? TinaLees-Jones (talk) 11:52, 13 August 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Category:Footballers from Paillaco

[edit]
Nominator's rationale: Category with just one entry.

Note- This is also the only entry in 'Sportspeople from Paillaco'. If this category is deleted, it would save time to bypass Sportspeople otherwise another CFD would be needed. Lost in Quebec (talk) 08:49, 13 August 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Category:Journalists from the Northern Territory

[edit]
Nominator's rationale: Only has 1 entry LibStar (talk) 06:32, 13 August 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Category:Wars involving Seychelles

[edit]
Nominator's rationale: delete, the category only contains a redirect and it is not clearly about a war anyway. Marcocapelle (talk) 05:13, 13 August 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Category:Former voivodeships of Grand Duchy of Lithuania

[edit]
Nominator's rationale: rename, "former" is redundant because the Grand Duchy of Lithuania no longer exists. Adding "the", similar to e.g. Category:Battles involving the Grand Duchy of Lithuania. Marcocapelle (talk) 05:02, 13 August 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Category:Antisemitism in China

[edit]
Nominator's rationale: this category contains only three articles: a main article, a media, and an Internet celebrity, Not to mention that anti-Semitism in China has only appeared on the Internet in recent years. Coddlebean (talk) 04:14, 5 August 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Category:Dominican Republic slaves

Nominator's rationale: Recently created 1-article category Gjs238 (talk) 15:05, 5 August 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Category:Edo

[edit]
Nominator's rationale: rename, Edo is the former name of Tokyo, but we hardly ever categorize based on a name only. If not merged, rename to Category:Edo (former Tokyo) in order to avoid confusion with Category:Edo (ethnic group). Marcocapelle (talk) 09:01, 3 August 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Marcocapelle is correct that categories are often disambiguated even when their eponymous articles are not, which is why speedy criterion C2D does not apply in those cases. Mclay1 (talk) 03:16, 4 August 2024 (UTC)[reply]
  • How much do these individual articles even belong in this category in the first place? It looks to me like many of them could be sorted into better categories than this one. Take Yakatabune, for example. The connection to Edo is clear but I'm not really sure what good the categorization is. Note that it isn't in a category for Tokyo or for the Heian period. -- asilvering (talk) 23:03, 7 August 2024 (UTC)[reply]
