I. You can't defame the dead in Australia. 2. Truth and public interest now constitute a defence anyway. 3. I was a member of the Queensland press gallery for part of the Joh years. After I left Queensland, I interviewed Joh repeatedly either on his silent number in the Executive Building or at Bethany. Joh was given to both porkies and wild claims. EG; He once told me (on tape) that the ALP were linked to the "African National Council [sic]" who had been in Queensland buying tyres for necklacing! 4. Hundreds of Queenslanders can testify to being bashed by police during the civil liberties, anti vietnam war and street march demonstrations. Many of them now work as barristers, professors, journalists and very senior public servants. 5. This sanitising of history confirms my prejudices about the Wiki as a source of information. I wonder if Adolph Hitler had a wiki entry in 1933, whether he would have been described as a kindly vegetarian who liked dogs!

Oh yes I forgot. Wayne Goss' government revealed I was one of the many with a Special branch file. Maybe that's why I got a police tail after I questioned Terry Lewis' (subsequently a convicted felon) links with organised crime.

History is most defintely not bunk!

I have copied these comments to the article talk page. My intention was not to sanatise, but to remove information that did not have references/citations to back it up. This is required under wiki policy. Rimmeraj 03:18, 15 March 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Pictures

[edit]

Sorry if i wasnt supposed to put this here, but if ya want i can supply you with photos of Northgate, Nundah, Toombul, Virginia and Yeronga areas if needed, if so email me at sam_verhoeff@hotmail.com

Thanks, I will email you some time soon, but most likely after xmas. No worries about he location of your edit, but next time place it down the bottom (as I almost did not see it at the top :)

I bow to your greater research. However I note that the ABC, which of course cannot refer to sponsor names, continues to refer to the stadium as Lang Park, and that as a Brisbane resident myself I hear many peers still refer to Lang Park. Other stadia such as Optus Oval and Skilled Stadium maintain their former names - Princes Park and Kardinia Park are now said to refer to the land on which the stadia are situated. But if the name Lang Park is now officially gone for good then fair enough.

Place name convention

[edit]

Hi

Please note the naming convention documented at Wikipedia:Naming conventions_(city names)#Australia. Regards--A Y Arktos 01:54, 15 December 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Hi Rimmeraj,
I noticed that you moved Toowong, Queensland to Toowong and had started changing the wikilinks from other pages. I made an inquiry at WP:AWNB and was in the middle of writing you a message but had an edit conflict when AYArkos was writing to you. I've noticed that somebody else has started reverting your edits. I just thought I would post this message as a courtesy in case you were still making changes to other articles to point out that the article will move back to Toowong, Queensland and that the otehr edits will probably change back too. Sorry for the confusion and and trouble. -- Adz 02:02, 15 December 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Hi Adz

I was not aware of the standard, but even now that I am aware of it I question why that is our standard. Considering the majority of other nationalities (excepting the US which is still debating the standard) only place the state/country if required for disambiguation.

I am not willing to follow this further other than to say my vote is for the place name alone without the state mentioned afterwards unless there is a need based on disambiguation. Rimmeraj 02:13, 15 December 2005 (UTC)[reply]

G'Day, I have to say that I've wondered it too. I spent some time working on articles about locations in the ACT and having to type out Australian Capital Territory after each place name is a real pain, but apparently it was decided by concensus, so I'm just going along with it. -- Adz 02:22, 15 December 2005 (UTC)[reply]

For the record, the US isn't still debating the standard, and hasn't for a long time. Moreover, South Africa implemented the same naming convention earlier this year, and we're the main three countries that have gotten to the point of trying to cover every suburb and locality. While it means having to type slightly more in order to link to other pages, it fixed a serious problem we had with links pointing all over the place and articles being created at multiple titles. It has made things much simpler now that all the articles use the same naming format and can be redirected to from every other possibility. Ambi 12:15, 15 December 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Toowong

[edit]

Hi, I just thought I'd let you know that I have a picture of the Royal Exchange (RE) that I can upload. There wasn't an article for it so I haven't uploaded it yet, but I will in the next couple of days in case it comes in handy. -- Adz 00:09, 16 December 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks, I plan to expand the section for the RE soon. Rimmeraj 00:15, 16 December 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks for the comment on the talk page about the History text. I noticed that some of the text about the Library comes from another website too. If I get time, I'll try to rewrite it over the weekend. You really have to be careful about borrowing text verbatim. If for no other reason, somebody in future will just come along and delete it and all the info will be gone. It's better to summarise it and provide a link. You might want to take a look at Wikipedia:Copyrights, paricularly Contributors' rights and obligations and Wikipedia:Copyright problems. The article is looking good though. Good work. -- Adz 05:35, 16 December 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Hi, just letting you know that I removed the {{underconstruction}} tag from the Toowong article. If you're going to me adding major bits again to it in future you might wantto put it back, but please remember to take it down when you finish work for the day. It's only supposed to stay on for the short time that you're working on the article. -- Adz 00:51, 20 December 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Soccer club naming

[edit]

Hello. I noticed that you have recently moved a few existing articles about Australian soccer teams to new articles with "Soccor" in the name. I was curious if this was a typo and if you would like help in moving the articles to ones with the proper spelling of "Soccer". Best regards. Jogurney 20:39, 14 November 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Toowong

[edit]

A few suggestions based on my experiences:

If you're trying to get every suburb in Brisbane with a reasonable article, something like Toowong is probably a bit high a target to reasonably aim for - it takes a lot of very local knowledge and a lot of time to write something like that. Something along the lines of Phillip, Australian Capital Territory allows for a reasonable, if basic, coverage of the suburb, while also being able to be written fairly quickly - that's how we were able to cover the whole city of Canberra so fast without resorting to substubs.

Secondly, while Toowong is detailed, I think it could do with a bit of work if it is to be used as an ultimate goal. The landmarks section is very long and very list-like, and its contents aren't very integrated. Demographics, politics and geography sections would improve the article. It might be an idea to look to Australia's only featured suburb article, Waterfall Gully, South Australia as an example - it does all of these really well (especially the landmarks/attractions section, which is difficult to cover in a way suitable for an encyclopedia). Rebecca 03:28, 20 November 2006 (UTC)[reply]

For reference, we also have Yarralumla, Australian Capital Territory as a featured example. Happy editing ;)--cj | talk 02:04, 21 November 2006 (UTC)[reply]

List of Brisbane suburbs

[edit]

I think both of you are right. I don't really like the distance from city thing but it's redundant with the category, so long as all suburbs are in the category, and all have pages. If some suburbs don't have a page, the list is useful for seeing what is missing. Grace Note 03:13, 23 November 2006 (UTC)[reply]

And while Yarralumla might be the aim, I'd settle for something basic for every suburb for now. They could do with some standardising though. Grace Note 03:15, 23 November 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Re: Colloquial

[edit]

Hi Rimmeraj, you are correct that by wiktionary's definition "Green Bridge" is in no way a colloquial term. I was using "colloquially" as a synonym for "commonly", the internet does not back this definition and nor do real dictionaries. I never considered the possibility that I did not know the correct meaning of colloquial.

I wasn't sure why you removed "colloquially" in the intro so I was unsure of what edit summary to put in, sometimes no edit summary is the most informative edit summary, or something, I just made that up then. I also thought that it was superfluos to say "before official naming" after "originally known as" just to fill up the rest of the edit summary. Grumpyyoungman01 20:37, 26 November 2006 (UTC)[reply]

And thank you for bringing it to my attention and thereby indirectly improving my vocabulary. Grumpyyoungman01 02:48, 27 November 2006 (UTC)[reply]
'Colloquial' now strikes me as a portmanteau of loquacious and parochial. Grumpyyoungman01 06:32, 27 November 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Harristown State High School, Toowoomba

[edit]

Why did you move this information out of the Toowoomba article? It does not, as it stands, constitute a good article by any standard, and if my experience is a guide, if you do not expand it, no one will. Denni talk 01:12, 30 November 2006 (UTC)[reply]

It does not yet, but all articles start small. I had the choice of deleting the information from the original page or moving to a new. The info on the original page was not relevant to that article. Rimmeraj 01:14, 30 November 2006 (UTC)[reply]
I conducted some research a while back, and found that less than 20% of school articles had been significantly edited even after a year from creation. Really bad stubs remained for the most part really bad stubs. I would very much disagree with you that "all articles begin small". I regularly do New Pages patrol, and a large percentage of articles begin as fairly lengthy (in excess of 1K bytes) submissions. I've been working with Wikipedia for three years, and it is not often I see an article progress much beyond where it starts. Not always, of course - I've added significantly to articles myself - but as a general rule of thumb, articles tend not to improve a lot unless they address a subject familiar to a number of people. If this article is to serve Wikipedia well, much more information, and particularly information which confirms the notability of the school, needs to be added. Otherwise, deletion is a real possibility. Far better to leave it in the Toowoomba article, where at least a mention of the school is retained. Denni talk 01:30, 30 November 2006 (UTC)[reply]
ok, will delete school stub. Rimmeraj 02:05, 30 November 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Tallest buildings lists vandal

[edit]

Thanks for your note on the Talk:Tulsa, Oklahoma page regarding the re-addition of the Tallest buildings list. Reviewing the edit pattern at Tulsa, Oklahoma, Mobile, Alabama, Little Rock, Arkansas, and Brisbane, it appears the anonymous editor in question has used the following IP's:

Hi. When I was using Google Earth there is a wikipedia icon with the article relating to Indooroopilly situated East of Coopooroo and South of Bulimba, i.e. about Carina! It is not even on the correct side of the river. That is what I was trying to have moved. My apologies for breaking the previous link. -Fermion 07:29, 19 February 2007 (UTC)[reply]

I suspect that the change you are trying to make is not controlled in the Indooroopilly article itself. (and I cannot help on how to fix it) Rimmeraj 22:38, 19 February 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Joh and the Press

1. In Australia, one cannot defame a dead person. 2. Truth ann even public interest is now usually a defence in defamation. 3. As a former member of the Queensland press gallery, I can assure you that John would look you straight in the eye and tell you porkies. I was there. I didn't read it on a website! He once told me (on tape) that the Queensland ALP was associated with the "African National Council sic" who had been in Australia buying tyres for necklacing. 4. I interviewed Joh many times for national broadcast. He often seemed inarticulate but he was very intelligent. Indeed when I broke the news to him about Lionel Murphy's terminal cancer, he replied quickly, "pursue him to the end!" 5. Hundreds of Queenslanders can testify to being bashed by police during demondtrations . Calling them 'violent protests" is a weasel word, which avoids nominting the source of violence. 6. The role of the foreman in Joh's trial is well known and subject to at least one documentary.

This re-editing confirms my prejudices about Wikis. I figure that Adolph Hitler had been subject to a Wiki entry in 1933, he would have been described as a vegetarian who likes dogs!

Bravo on the speedy adding of references and cleaning up the article on The Mansions, Brisbane. Excellent work! Gillyweed 03:52, 26 March 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Hi, I was just wondering about the reasoning behind this edit. I thought the more recent revision was a bit nicer, in that it avoided messing up the article with a "Maps and Aerial Photos" section. I haven't reverted, but I think going back would be a good idea. -Aioth 01:18, 14 April 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Hi, Aioth. the format of map used is used through out all the other suburbs (or is in the process of being added). and when I reviewed your change it appeared that the map link had been 'removed'. I think having the map links under geography is very appropriate and provides the reader with an easy way to 'see' the geography.

Kasamh Se

[edit]

Hello Rimmeraj. I hope I did not offend you in any way by my comments on the Kasamh Se disscussion page. In fact, I would like you to know that I have ranted about the comments the people left after me that can be viewed now Talk:Kasamh_Se#I_just_want_to_say_thanks. In response to your message on my talk page, I would like to say that I do actually have some knowledge about the Kasamh Se article as I regularly used to watch it from when it started to approx. October of 2006. Unfortunately, I don't watch it on a regular basis anymore and I have no idea really of what's going on. At the moment, I'm quite busy with some school work during this month and I assure you that I will improve the KS article in the future whenever I have sufficient time to work on it. In addition, I'd also like to tell you that I don't watch Kyunki Saas Bhi Kabhi Bahu Thi and will not be able to contribute to it for the reason that I don't have any knowledge about it. However, I may be able to do a few edits here and there to improve the article ever so slightly, although I won't be able to contributue to it majorly. Thanks for considering me as a article cleaner, I appreciate it. --Bhavesh.Chauhan 02:23, 26 April 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Hi Bhavesh Chauhan, I have no reason to be offended. If anyone should be offended it is you who has been personally attacked by the 'authors' of this article. Your rant at them is justified, but I don't think you will have much luck with the authors (I am also being attacked, no matter what I write). They are unwilling to read the wikipedia standards which you have pointed out repeatedly. Rimmeraj 02:29, 26 April 2007 (UTC)[reply]
Hi! I'm happy to get your quick feedback. I am also glad that there is another sophisticated Wikipedian like me that understands the guidelines and Wikipedia standards. You see, I am an Indian that's been living outside India pretty much a year or two after I was born there so I undersand quite a lot more than what an average Indian living in India would understand. The majority people on that article are Indians that live in India (I can tell by the ways they write: a typical Fresh off the boat attitude when arguing) have no knowledge about what Wikipedia is so they argue with what they think is right. It's pretty hectic on that discussion page and I've read most of the problems the authors have and they are all have the same attitude about it. It's quite hard to control all of it although after reading all of the comments, I'm deciding to focus more on giving the message of "What Wikipedia is not" so a lot of them understand, but it seems like people just write a comment once on the talk page and then never come back onto wikipedia which is a bit strange. --Bhavesh.Chauhan 03:20, 26 April 2007 (UTC)[reply]

A Hectic Situation

[edit]

I only now realise how intense this situation is and this is clearly something that needs to be handled properly. We still have to keep trying to convince this authors that what they are doing is not right no matter how many times they try to threaten us. Anyway, I have found other Indian serials that contains heavy loads of information that obviously needs to be cleaned up and shortened.

--Bhavesh.Chauhan 03:48, 27 April 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Hi again, agreed I will add all these and any other related items I can find to my watch list and help in fixing them up. Instead of big changes I am taking a gradual approach changing and improving across various articles. As you said we should keep at it and try to educate everyone involved. "New Messages"

[edit]

Hi, I'm constantly getting that I have 'new messages' even though nothing on this IP's talk page has changed. I've noticed you wrote on it so I'm asking how the heck to get rid of the banner at the top that constantly says I have new messages even when I repeatedly visit my talk page. Thanks 05:08, 2 May 2007 (UTC)

Hi, I am not sure why this is happening. I have not recently (last few days) changed the talk page. My first suggestion would be to sign up for an account. Second suggestion is to actually click on the 'new messages' link, which should make it go away. Then press the refresh button with ctrl held down (IE cache refresh of web page). IF it is still there... do a search for 'you have new messages' to see if there are any solutions. or just ignore it. Rimmeraj 06:11, 2 May 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Property Values

[edit]

Hi Rimmer,

I agree with you regarding the relative irrelevance of property values. Some suburbs are beginning to to look like real estate agents' adverts. Check out 'Hamilton, Brisbane' [where I once lived]. I admire all your good work & would be glad to hear more from you regarding this issue. I'm new to this.

Brisbane suburbs

[edit]

Hello, regarding the distances used from Brisbane CBD. I am using Google Earth Plus to measure the direct distance from a particular suburb to Brisbane general post office which is the method used for surveying between towns in Victoria which is where I am originally from. Therefore there may be slight differences in distances as it seems they are measured by road or rail distance which is usually considerably more as the distance isn't measured in a straight line. I suspect some of the original distances posted may have been estimated as they didn't seem to match the direct distance or distance by road either. Pakenham4 --Pakenham4 12:24, 8 September 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Regarding Wynnum West, 24 kilometers from Brisbane would be highly inaccurate as it is 18 kilometers by road according to whereis.com directions search and 16 kilometers direct distance. —Preceding unsigned comment added by Pakenham4 (talkcontribs) 12:33, 8 September 2007 (UTC)[reply]

I'll be sure to add references from now on. It's good to know people are actively watching articles, Thanks. Pakenham4 12:49, 8 September 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Locality –> Suburb

[edit]

Hello. I noticed your work on Brisbane suburbs, and how you merged the locality of Toombul into the page of the suburb it actually falls in, Nundah. Not many people realise that, well done. :) Similarly I am suggesting that the unlinked, unloved Kananook, Victoria, a locality within Seaford, be merged into Seaford, Victoria. I know there is Wikipedia:Naming conventions (settlements) – is that the best we've got to advise how to deal with this?  SEO75 [talk] 04:52, 9 September 2007 (UTC)[reply]

The merge is usually argued based on notability. Secondly the two articles normally cover the same material, for example if a well known land mark falls inside the locality and the suburb, it ends up being written twice (unless it warrants a seperate page). I do not know of any formal guidelines other than notability. I shall comment on the discussion on the one in question also. Rimmeraj 03:13, 12 September 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Hi, I'm new to this wikipedia thing, but I do work in the state government mapping authority and thought it should be pointed out that suburbs are simply localities in urban areas. I think in your context when you talk about 'localities' you are actually referring to 'unbounded localities' which are areas that are accepted by the community but not "official' suburbs as gazetted under the Queensland Place Names Act (examples would be Ithaca, Buranda, Rosalie, etc). These unbounded localities are shown in the UBD street directory in upper and lower case as opposed to Localities / Suburbs which are all capitals. Ch4nhw 02:30, 17 September 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Hi, and welcome to Wikipedia. Agreed suburbs are just localities, and yes I am talking about 'unbounded' or 'non-gazetted' localities. I apologise for the bad use of terms in the discussion. The approach we have been using is that a locality that is not gazetted is not notable enough to warrant an article. Also the unbounded localities often cover the same material as a suburb or bounded locality. We need to draw the line in the sand somewhere, how does the UBD determine what unbounded localities belong? there are very small and trivial un-bounded localities, some not so trivial, but I don't believe any of the un-bounded localities warrant an article in their own right.
The situation we end up where the suburb article covers the material that is in the un-bounded locality article, and the two articles are very similar.
Unbounded localities belong as sections inside the bounded / Suburb article. Rimmeraj 03:05, 17 September 2007 (UTC)[reply]
Hello again. :) I agree; in Wikipedia I think it is best to focus on bounded, drawn, substantive suburbs. Localities, especially having no verifiable boundaries, are probably not that notable that a mention in the page about the suburb it falls within can't suffice.  SEO75 [talk] 03:34, 17 September 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Hi,
You appear to be eligible to vote in the current Arbitration Committee election. The Arbitration Committee is the panel of editors responsible for conducting the Wikipedia arbitration process. It has the authority to enact binding solutions for disputes between editors, primarily related to serious behavioural issues that the community has been unable to resolve.
