medieval cities

[edit]

Didn't Pirenne also write something rather controversy-generating about the development of medieval cities? Not mentioned in this article. I'll look into it and see if I can add to this. --Christofurio 16:51, Nov 16, 2004 (UTC)

I guess you refeering to "Medieval Cities" (1925) (originally published in english language as result of material wrote for some american university conferences ). This piece is part of the "Pirenne thesis" so I guess that's the reason why it wasn't mentioned specifically. Basically Pirenne claims that the crisis of urbanization of High Middle Ages was caused by the Arabic Expansion as well as the economical one (Mahomet et Charlemagne). Pirenne Thesis

[edit]

Perhaps this article should focus more on the man, and a new "Pirenne Thesis" article be created?

If there is enough material to warrant a split otherwise its better to keep together if given a choice. Stbalbach 15:34, 24 Jun 2005 (UTC)

The spread of Islam as the cause of Carolingian "barbarism" or whatever (the ruralization of the European economy) is not simply contested. It is dead. No respectable medievalist would adhere to it today. Yet Wiki insists on thinking it still valid more or less. It is not. Wiki is wrong as it is so often. And it is clear that Wiki is written by amateurs who don't know much and certainly not as much as they should. Why bother to try to improve Wiki when it resists all such attempts? — Preceding unsigned comment added by 68.63.202.17 (talk) 05:00, 5 May 2012 (UTC)[reply]

This is a great opportunity for someone of your intelligence to help bring us of lower intelligence up a couple iq points. :-) Your comment is at best bad taste. Your not a shallow person with low self-esteem that will bring down those around yourself in order to raise yourself up. Do you subscribe to the belief that an educated person must be pompous and grandios — Preceding unsigned comment added by Donnydarkooo (talkcontribs) 05:28, 7 August 2012 (UTC)[reply]

his collection of what?

[edit]

"Henri Pirenne, donated his collection to the Academia Belgica in Rome."

Why is there a comma between noun and predicate here? Also, I for one have no idea what collection he donated. Medieval artefacts? illuminated manuscripts? baseball cards? --Christofurio 20:47, 11 December 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Thank you for addressing this. --Christofurio 22:13, 13 December 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Henri Pirenne remains a master

[edit]

In a time when Iran is spreading Islam in the world, Henri Pirenne remains a master historian.Richard Hodges put some new things, from arquelogical evidences, but Henri Pirenne remains mainly correct.Agre22 (talk) 03:46, 21 April 2009 (UTC)agre22[reply]

History of Belgium written in French or Russian or both?

[edit]

Did Pirenne write a history of Belgium in French as it written in the first part of the article? The second part of the article says that he wrote a history of Europe in Russian. Did he write in French and Russian or is the wiki article incorrect? 71.48.124.143 (talk) 04:56, 7 August 2012 (UTC)mark m.[reply]

Western / Eastern

[edit]

In the "Islam" part of the article, a sentence says: " Instead, the Muslim conquest of north Africa made the Mediterranean a barrier, cutting western Europe off from the east, enabling the Carolingians, especially Charlemagne, to create a new, distinctly western form of government."

This is not altogether clear to me. Even if we accept that France is "western" Europe, and Spain, located more to the west, is not, it's not clear to me from which "east" this Western Europe was cut off, in Pirenne's theory. Not from what we call today Eastern Europe, I guess. The only country mentioned is Egypt (for papyrus), but doubtless, Muslim Spain also accounts for "the wealthier parts of the world". Aren't we talking about "North and South" instead of East and West? If Pirenne formulated it that way, he surely must have explained why? Any Pirenne expert around? Thanks!
