Linear and angular momentum

[edit]

What's the point of the first equation in this section? It gives no useful information. Because vector addition has the associative property, the equation can be simplified to , which is useless. 108.72.4.161 (talk) 04:44, 25 November 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Good question. Separating the position coordinate ri into the sum of the vector to the reference point R and the relative position vector r<sub?>i-R is the first step in representing the linear momentum of a body as the sum of the momentum of its reference point and the momentum computed from the relative position vectors which sum to zero when R is the center of mass. I hope this helps. Prof McCarthy (talk) 17:24, 25 November 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Datam

"Another way of interpreting the process here is the mechanical balancing of moments about an arbitrary datam." Did you mean datum? Art LaPella (talk) 05:02, 6 March 2015 (UTC)[reply]

"In rock balancing, the stability of a collection of rocks is related to its center of mass in relation to its resting point (contact points) of the rocks." is too vague to call it false, but the information content to small to have any effect beyond suggesting the activity is too complicated for the colleague to write or talk usefully about, without waving their hands. Nice picture tho, and i'm giving a shot to writing something at least vaguely related to it.
