Since I have the copyright to this Info I don't see the problem Maria Meeuwissen

Maria, I don't think there is an issue with copyright, just the tne of the writing in the article. It reads more like a tourism brochure, not an encyclopedia entry.

Cleanup

[edit]

I will attempt a cleanup - anyone want to assist? I also will upload some original images to Wikimedia for use in the article.

Hello? Spankr 01:53, 8 May 2007 (UTC)[reply]
Am happy to help, I know bequia very well, but much of what is being added recently is more tourism related and better suited to wikitravel then here. Russeasby 02:09, 8 May 2007 (UTC)[reply]
Agreed! Lets clean it up and make it right... Spankr 02:17, 8 May 2007 (UTC)[reply]
Also agree. I will assist anyway I can. Very glad to see your effort. I would like to contribute to deeper content about Bequia, its history, culture and people...IamDavo —Preceding comment was added at 14:52, 1 February 2008 (UTC)[reply]
IamDavo, your efforts are appreciated, but I do want to point out that Wikipedia is not a travel guide, such details on ferries are really beyond the scope of Wikipedia. Facts about the island, its history, its culture, etc... are far more valuebul to an encyclopedia then how many people the ferry seats. Russeasby (talk) 15:00, 1 February 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Scope of WikiProject??

[edit]

"Bequia is within the scope of WikiProject Caribbean" - well whoop-D-doo! What if an article doesn't "want' to be "in the scope"? What authority do projects have to take governance of Wiki entries? What if I want to start an "Entries that I don't like" project? - OK - that's laying it on a little thick, but you know what I mean? Spankr 02:21, 8 May 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Nobody owns articles on wikipedia (WP:OWN), not you or any editor or any WikiProject. It's not about governance, all a WikiProject will do is assess an article for quality (which anyone can change and discuss like any other content) and attract the attention of other editors to read and collaborate on the article. I don't know why you would want an article to not be part of a WikiProject when it's clearly in scope, but there's not much to be done about it. (BTW, an "Entries that I don't like" project would probably be at odds with WP:NPOV among other things, and most likely wouldn't last long). —Mu Mind (talk) 15:45, 23 April 2011 (UTC)[reply]

"Safest Harbor" in Caribbean

[edit]

I removed this twice which was added by User:Bequia_Foundation, while it is a terrific natural harbor there are dozens of far safer harbors for hurricanes in the caribbean, this claim is downright ridiculous and POV. Russeasby 18:49, 20 September 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Not quite so. I have lived for years on Bequia. I am also a Captain myself and is for sure lectured as a place where ships can hideout until huricanes passes by. Known as safest natural harbour in the Eastern Caribbean / Windwards. Check the Pilot and Notice to Mariners published by the British Admiralty for factual display. The French, Dutch & Spanish Admiralty may have different POV. --Bequia Foundation 18:31, 25 September 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Well, in the entry you made on this page you suggested it was the safest harbor in the caribbean, you did not qualify it with "windwards" or "eastern". I think you can agree that in the entire caribeen basic that there are dozens of far safer places, particularly on the coast of venezuela and columbia where hurricans do not even hit. Or islands like Cucaou which have completely enclosed harbors. Though even if you qualified the statement with "eastern" I would say there may well be more protected anchorages then Bequia, though Windwards its getting pretty specific. Though for a yacht, it would still be far safer in Tyrel Bay in Cariacou, though that wouldnt be much good for a ship. I can still think of several anchorages I would feel better being in then Bequia in the Windwards, but I would be okay with a statement like "Bequia is considered to be one of the safest anchorages in the Windward islands for a ship to ride out a hurricane", but to call it the safest (as opposed to one of) and to suggest in the entire caribbean basin, I find to be extreamly far fetched personally. I dont have the British Admirty pilot myself, I do have a Reeds stowed away somewhere which I dont want to dig out right now. If you have the BA Pilot handy and can quote from it to support your statement then I of course cannot object to you including it in the article. Really its ideal to have references and cite them in the article when you are adding factually information or anything that potentially be seen as POV. As a side note, I dont want to you think I appear anti-Bequia, its actually probably my favorite stop in the eastern caribbean, I spend over a month there every year... "Livin above the poverty line in Paradise". I just want to keep the article encyclopedic and within the goals and intensions of wikipedia. Russeasby 22:31, 25 September 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Yes, I see your point here now. For professional traders it is one of the very few deepwater places to ride out a hurricane. Similar for (super)yachts with a deeper than regular yachting drafts. Reconing that you have US maps on board, you can see for yourself that there isn't any good sheltered deep water anchorages around. In line of trying to become encyclopedic, I would suggest to call it "Bequia's Admiralty Bay is one of the safest deeper anchorages in the Windwards".

The Grenadines in general are a real nightmare for deepwater vessels on their passage thru and are primarily advised to stear clear and make use of another passage. They can however use the passage north of Bequia, and can even enter Admiralty Bay to ride out a hurricane or make a stop for fresh supplies. The lacking of propperly working lighthouses on higher grounds and enlightened bouys that run out of batteries are also noted, hence the huge number of shipwreckings in earlier days throughout the Grenadines. I think this should be included too. It is common sence, practical knowledge. --Bequia Foundation 07:58, 28 September 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Starting to sound like a tourist brochure

[edit]

While its great that the article is getting expanded, some of the wording is rather unencyclopedic and the article is going to need some serious clean up, including references. Russeasby 03:02, 24 September 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Largest island?

[edit]

Is Bequia really the largest island in the Grenadines, as claimed by this article? Looking at a chart Carriacou appears to be larger, but I dont know what the hard data is, but I seriously suspect the article is incorrect. Note that while Carriacou is part of the nation of Grenada, it is also technically a island in the Grenadines (even though not part of the nation St Vincent and the Grenadines). Does anyone have the sq km of Bequia handy to compare? Russeasby 03:27, 24 September 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Hi there. I agree. Think we should change that to "largest Vincentian island of the Grenadines". What would you suggest? —Preceding unsigned comment added by Bequia Foundation (talkcontribs) 18:18, 25 September 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Someone else already went in and changed it to "second largest", which I am fine with. Though I would still like to see the sq km noted(good kind of info for an encyclopedia article to have). I think "largest Vincentian island of the Grenadines" wont work because most people unfamiliar with St Vincent may not understand "Vincentian". However if you dont like the "second largest" as it is now, may I suggest we use the method the Union Island article uses to describe it as southern most, for Bequia it could read: "Bequia is the largest island of the Grenadines belonging to the state of St. Vincent and the Grenadines", nice and clear I think. Russeasby 22:37, 25 September 2007 (UTC)[reply]

I agree. Lets use both Vincentian (or if we be funny Vincy). "Bequia is the largest Vincentian island of the Grenadines belonging to the state of St. Vincent & the Grenadines". It would be opening a new topic, Vincentian slang language on Bequia. --Bequia Foundation 07:17, 28 September 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Whaling Photos

[edit]

Does anyone have any photos of the whaling boats? I dont seem to have any (though I am sure I took some). The whaling section could be greatly improved with the additional of a photo of one of those locally built boats. I do have a number of photos I took of the carcass of male humpback caught last year while it was being carved up for meat, but those are a tad greusome and I dont think ad much benefit. Russeasby 22:56, 25 September 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Not an official flag

[edit]

Saint Vincent is a unitary state and none of the nearby islands known collectively as the Grenadines has an official local flag of its own, so far as is known.
— The Flag Bulletin, issue 218, page 6

This is the ultimate source for the flag image, as constructed by one Jaume Ollé and then imported into Wikimedia Commons; and this is what it actually says on the subject. It describes an unofficial flag:

It is white with a stylized black whale inside a black frame together with the name of the island and three stylized waves.
— The Flag Bulletin, issue 218, page 7

What this article has in its infobox is not an official flag, and is quite misleading. Uncle G (talk) 17:45, 29 July 2019 (UTC)[reply]

The unofficial flag sucks the big one

[edit]

The flag violates many policies of good flag bad flag. What thot designed that flag? I hope one day, Bequia adopts a beautiful flag. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 2A02:C7D:DC0C:CD00:CD73:AF0B:B6ED:3DE0 (talk) 11:27, 29 April 2020 (UTC)[reply]
