Hermine Overbeck-Rohte (1869-1937) was an Impressionistic painter, and the wife of artist Fritz Overbeck. As a schoolgirl she yearned to become an artist, but trained as a nurse due to family objections. However, she later studied with landscape painter Paul Koken and others, becoming a member of an artists' colony in Worpswede, in northwestern Germany near Bremen. After her husband's death in 1909, she strove to preserve his oeuvré, and continued to paint. This felicitous Trocknende Wäsche ("Drying Laundry") dates from 1896.

Three ex-Navalny lawyers face 'extremism' charge in secret trial

Three Russian lawyers were charged on Sept. 12, 2024, after being jailed in October 2023 for membership in an "extremist" group, an allegation that packs prison terms of up to six years. The lawyers – Vadim Kobzev, Alexei Liptser and Igor Serguni – were accused of having passed information to jailed opposition leader Alexei Navalny. The current court proceeding at Petushki, near Moscow, was closed after Russian officials said a public trial was likely to foment rebukes from pro-Navalny sources abroad. Navalny, 47, died on Feb. 16, 2024, in a remote penal colony north of the Arctic Circle, where he was serving a 19-year sentence for "extremism" and other alleged offenses.
