The article states: > They took their definition of Temperance from the Greek writer Xenophon: "moderation in all things healthful; total abstinence from > all things harmful." Thus the temperance approach to alcohol was defined as total abstinence.

This doesn't make sense. Could someone check this? Samrolken 13:28, 6 Sep 2004 (UTC)

What part doesn't make sense?

The Union Signal?

[edit]

Why was the reference to the Union Signal removed? It's still very much published by the WCTU. —The preceding unsigned comment was added by 198.236.216.253 (talkcontribs) 09:05, 28 March 2006 (UTC+11 hours)

Overlinked?

[edit]

I visited this page in an attempt to help with Disambiguation link repair. In my view, the page is seriously overlinked -- see the Wikipedia Manual of Style on links at WP:MOS-L. Cutting the number of links down would help the article's readability immensely. -- Smatthewman 16:03, 17 May 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Criticize my criticism if you want...

[edit]

Okay, criticize me if you must, but I wonder why Christianity (being one of the most problematic insitutions of history) is not in-and-of-itself considered to be one of those "things harmful" which should be "abstained" from!!! Thus it's wrong to drink but it's okay to teach fundamentalism and everything else that goes along with it!?!?! That makes sense {sarcastic} !!!

First read: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wikipedia:What_Wikipedia_is_not#Wikipedia_is_not_a_soapbox. There are plenty of places online for you to engage in your simpering bigotry. This isn't one of them - take it elsewhere.

Date Consistency

[edit]

The WCTU could not have been founded in Canada in 1873, as it wasn't until the very end of 1873 that it came into existence in the first place. The national WCTU organization wasn't founded until November of 1874.

Current Membership

[edit]

Just curious---about how many members are in the WCTU currently? Anyone have a source? It doesn't seem to be on the WCTU web site. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 71.242.17.190 (talk) 05:38, 16 January 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Let's add a Criticism section!

[edit]

Here's some text for consideration to include in the article:

The ideological and political notion of limiting access to alcohol products has been noted by many researchers as outdated, unscientific and overly-manipulative of human populaces. (Add many easy to find, empirically researched references here.) Furthermore, contemporary studies highly correlate moderate alcohol beverage consumption with many health benefits, including (but not limited to) decreased risk of atherosclerosis,[1]

The above is a criticism of temperance in general and might go in that article. Even there though, a criticism citing one scientific paper only would not survive for 30 seconds. Take a look at the articles in the Alcohol and Health box to see hundreds of papers about alcohol's effects, often bad but sometimes good. Nunquam Dormio (talk) 08:27, 15 September 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Hello, if anyone is able to helpby looking over Loyal Temperance Legion and possibly adding references, that would be really helpful. It's been tagged for notability for 7 years now. Best wishes, Boleyn (talk) 18:51, 5 April 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Problems with lead section summary paragraph(s)

[edit]

The summary section is supposed to be a place where the contents of the article summarized, not an analysis of the topic by inserting explanations or opinions - in this case not even mentioned in the article itself. (Wikipedia:Manual of Style/Lead section) I propose removing the final paragraph from the lead section:

"The connections and contradictions between the two parts of its purpose—Christianity and Temperance[clarification needed]—meant that the women involved confronted ideological, philosophical, political and practical dilemmas in their efforts to improve society around the world. Although some labelled the Union as gender-biased, others disagreed by pointing out the many male supporters behind the scenes."

Jsniessen (talk) 16:12, 31 May 2016 (UTC)[reply]

I removed the above paragraph. If someone wants to pursue the thoughts therein, I suggest that they be appropriately referenced and incorporated or added into a new section of the article. Jsniessen (talk) 16:42, 1 June 2016 (UTC)[reply]

Adding a section on racial aspect

[edit]

Hello! I'm a student doing this for part of my course. I noticed there isn't any mention of the contributions/difficulties of racial minorities here, so I have written a small section about it. MimiMooon (talk) 13:47, 27 May 2023 (UTC)[reply]
