Generals don't enlist

[edit]

What is the source for "with Confederate Generals and many men enlisting....?" Generals don't enlist. What Confederate generals came from Harford County?

The whole section needs more careful writing and referencing.68.46.21.122 (talk) 03:31, 16 July 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Accuracy?

[edit]

Can someone confirm that David Hasselhoff is from Havre de Grace as the article now indicates. Other sources point to Baltimore - 45 miles away. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 76.182.26.187 (talk) 05:59, 20 September 2008 (UTC)[reply]

It's actually more along the lines of 35 miles away.

During the Revolutionary War the small hamlet known as Harmer's Town was visited several times by General Lafayette, who commented that the area reminded him of the French seaport "Le Havre." His comment was the source of the name "Havre de Grace," meaning Harbor of Grace, which became incorporated as a town in 1785. In 1791 Havre de Grace narrowly lost out to Washington, D.C. as the nation's capitol. On May 13, 1814, during the War of 1812, Havre de Grace was under seige by the British, after they had burned Washington and been held at bay by the defenders of Baltimore in the seige of Fort McHenry and the Battle of North Point. Lieutenant John O'Neill single-handedly defended the city of Havre de Grace by firing a canon at the British fleet as they approached on the Susquehanna River. He was wounded, captured by the British, and eventually released. The city of Havre de Grace was sacked and burned, with only two houses and a church spared destruction. Havre de Grace was rebuilt, and in 1878 the town became a city with the establishment of its own government. This small city in northeastern Maryland is known as a haven for many species of ducks, it's decoy artisans, the Concord Lighthouse, antique row, it's marinas, and the promenade (boardwalk) along the shores of the Susquehanna River.

Suggest someone add phonetic spelling of HdG so that Francophones are not surprised to hear the sound —Preceding unsigned comment added by 71.178.171.11 (talk) 12:42, 30 May 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Pronunciation

[edit]

I've added an audio file of the correct local pronunciation. -- Scjessey (talk) 14:30, 3 October 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Apparently, most locals say "hava-di-grace" completely Anglicized. The audio clip is just bizarre.....French pronunciation for "havre de' but with an aspirated h, and then grace with its English pronunciation. I think some more locals should weigh in on this before saying the audio file is "the correct local pronunciation."142.116.127.106 (talk) 01:02, 23 February 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Underground Railroad accuracy

[edit]

This section needs serious work. If you cross the Susquehanna from Havre de Grace, you end up in Perryville, Md, as the caption on the aerial photo notes. You're no closer to Pennsylvania on that side of the river, as it runs mainly north/south. You can't even take the Susquehanna north into Pennsylvania as there are rapids on the river north of the town. It's possible that they went by foot into Pennsylvania from that point, but they didn't cross the river into Pa. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 71.166.115.89 (talk) 14:36, 19 February 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Another problem with accuracy here is this statement: "When "vigilance increased at the ferry", the African-American refugees were guided upriver to cross from Columbia, Maryland, a town established by abolitionist Quakers.[11]" - Columbia, Maryland was founded in 1967 (100 years later) in Howard (not Harford) County, nowhere near the Susquehanna River. I don't have access to the reference cited to confirm if that's what it says. There are houses associated with the Underground Railroad in Darlington, Maryland, which was founded by Quakers, and it is also close to the Susquehanna and close to Havre de Grace (further north and thus also closer to PA). I wonder if that is what they meant? I don't have the sources to check so I am not going to do an edit, but if there are any ongoing caretakers of this page perhaps they can look into it. 2601:14A:C380:3270:90CD:E495:7BAC:790D (talk) 23:50, 28 January 2022 (UTC)[reply]
