Old Subway Chat

[edit]

Oh, don't worry about doing things wrong. I'd agree, there needs to be some kind of standardization for the metro stops. I have no idea if Metro Center was the right title, or if it should be moved to Metro Center Washington Metro Station. Personally, I'd say that each station name is unique enough to not need the "Washington Metro Station"--perhaps those could become redirects. Anyway, I won't be able to give the same level of detail on every station, but Metro Center is like the back of my hand--not only can I navigate it in my sleep, I frequently do (work sucks). I'd say that any standard format needs to include:

 • name
 • line
 • date of opening
 • number of people that go through the gates there daily, if we can get it
 • exits

Perhaps this could be presented in some sort of table format? I'm no good with MediaWiki, the system we use for standardized messages--but I'm sure it'll get worked out.

Yours, Meelar 03:19, 22 Mar 2004 (UTC)

Looking at other Metro systems, they don't appear to have articles for each individual station, so we're forging new ground. I'd say go with station name, on the grounds that it's less complicated. Keep in touch, Meelar 03:24, 22 Mar 2004 (UTC)

P.S. You ought to create a user page, so as to facilitate navigation to your talk page. Just a suggestion, though--there's plenty of people who don't have them.

Yeah, I was just about to click my name to make a page when I saw the You have new messages link appear. Still getting used to this. :)

I know what you mean; I started riding the Metro to school when I was 13, up til when I graduated from GWU at 20. (Any surprise that my first station entry was Foggy Bottom?) I can navigate it in my sleep, but so many station names have changed in the last 4 years that I need a map to figure out what's what now. :P

Yeah, not every station will get the same amount of detail - what can we say for Vienna? "It's in the middle of the Interstate"? But it's still worth what information we can put.

I'll take a look at a table format, and we should definitely include a list of notable nearby places. I'll look at the WikiProject and see what I can do.

Other Metro systems don't have articles for every individual station except for the London Underground, and that was my inspiration for portions of my formatting. Like they have names like Acton Town tube station. Then again, the British tube names are a lot less unique. Charing Cross will have multiple entries, as will Picadilly, etc.

You're problably right; there's very few stations that actually need 'Washington Metro Station' after them in the name, and they can be disambiguated somehow. Capitol Heights, Vienna, Rockville, etc... but things like Capitol South, Metro Center and Tenleytown-AU are pretty unique. --Golbez 04:03, 22 Mar 2004 (UTC)

From the talk page on Wikipedia:WikiProject Station:

This looks good. I'll look over my contributions thus far to follow this. Unfortunately, I don't know the table markup, but I'll do what I can. --Meelar 05:34, 22 Mar 2004 (UTC)

Smithsonian (Washington Metro) seems the better choice, you're right. Meelar 05:59, 28 Mar 2004 (UTC)

Metro station stub notice

[edit]

Golbez: I agree, it might seem like little more could be written on a metro station. In fact, there's little I can think of off the top of my head right now to embellish it with. But I've also learned from my experiences on the Internet and on Wikipedia that folks can write voluminously on the most arcane topics -- even ones I never would have expected could be anything more than 1-line statements. The stub notice is a way of advertising "Hey, if you've got anything else to say about this, fire away!", and so I think it's appropriate in the case of all short articles. -- Seth Ilys 19:55, 28 Mar 2004 (UTC)

B5

[edit]

Golbez: I decided to start importing my B5 content into Wikipedia, rather than waiting around for a separate (and less viable) project. I've already created pages for every episode. Expect the B5 activity to show up under "Things I'm Working On" later today. :) -- Seth Ilys 20:08, 28 Mar 2004 (UTC)

Metro station tables

[edit]

I shrank the table because it was overlapping the hot links, which I keep on the right side of the screen. It should probably be at about a width of 500 for every page. RickK | Talk 04:01, 6 Apr 2004 (UTC)

Traingle -> Triangle

[edit]

I'm a new user here, and really wanted a chance to see how the 'move page' button worked. It left a redirect behind; perhaps you could get rid of this, since I also changed the Metro redirect to it. Gadfium 04:11, 7 Apr 2004 (UTC)

Go to the MLS page click on the DC United link under teams it is a different link than the one under championship games there is a differenc in spacing in DC or the periods there are actually two seperate mirror pages for DC united I am just trying to combine all the dc united pages

Since you don't have a user, I can't respond to you directly, but you're going about it the wrong way. You are failing; what you're doing is creating a redirect that leads to itself. There is only one D. C. United page; if another page links to "DC United" or whatever, then either make that a redirect, or change the link. Or maybe I don't understand what you mean? --Golbez 22:39, 7 Apr 2004 (UTC)

Italians "disambiguation"

[edit]

Some of those disambiguations Italians -> Italians are wrong. In many pages, the ethnic group is meant, not the immediate country of origin. --Shallot 06:47, 9 Apr 2004 (UTC)

The common solution to the situation when only some of the links can be actually disambiguated is not to misdirect links. Instead, they are either left as is until a new page is written, or pointed to the inexistent page (thus inviting its creation). --Shallot 07:04, 9 Apr 2004 (UTC)

You are right that several ethnic groups don't have it, and the correlation between them and their old nation states is indicative. But when they're an autochtonous minority outside their nation state, they could/should eventually get a separate page so it's probably a good idea to link in that direction. Thanks. --Shallot

Copyvio procedure

[edit]

Hi. I saw your question about copyvio procedure on Wikipedia:Copyright problems. When a copyright violation is found do not edit the exiting article but if you want to create a substitute to replace it after deletion you can create Article name/Temp (with the "/Temp" after the name). - Tεxτurε 15:37, 23 Apr 2004 (UTC)

IMS table

[edit]

The additions look great. I just removed the thumb border around the photo; I think it works better inside the table without it. Thanks.

Rdikeman 21:17, May 23, 2004 (UTC)

I like listing the races (should the heading be "Current races"?). It's certainly not a problem to distinguish the important ones at IMS, with which I am more familiar, though I can see it would be harder for other venues. I learn a lot more about a track I don't know well -- like Atlanta -- if they are there.
Ownership and capacity may be important to some people; I think they belong there, too.

Edit summary field

[edit]

Hi! Just some advise from a co-wikipedian with common interests: it would be super-nice if everybody took a couple of seconds to fill in the summary field after editing articles (e.g. fixing typos -- in fact, especially then), so all the watchlist users didn't have to check the diff to find out what has changed. Saves us all a little annoyance and some time. No need for a doctoral thesis in the summary, just some short abbrevs will do, like "typo" etc. --Wernher 12:12, 12 Jul 2004 (UTC)

Cheers, I allways have problems naming pages!, as long as somebody reads it!- have added a bit to Foula in relation, and general. Congress

[edit]

I can't remember whether I got the data from Political Graveyard or from reference works at the UNC library. Political Graveyard has a number of minor errors, I've found, so it'd be valuable to cross reference with another source, anyhow.

I thought I had explained the *s; those are the sessions in which all members were elected at large, rather than from districts. I'll fix that on the page. -- Seth Ilys 00:51, 20 Jul 2004 (UTC)

Dashes

[edit]

Yes, but I just find double hyphens to be very ugly and I see no reason to let them stay for however long it might take for them to be auto converted, which for all I know could be a year or two or never. Everyking 18:49, 20 Jul 2004 (UTC)

I'm well aware, but that's undoing my work, what I'd consider a destructive edit. What on earth is the point? It only affects the edit screen, but the edit screen should still be an accurate representation of what the page actually looks like. Everyking 16:41, 21 Jul 2004 (UTC)

Day/month/year date format has nothing to do with anything. Obviously one wouldn't add a comma where it isn't appropriate, but I'd add them where they're supposed to be, assuming I'm already editing the article for some other reason and just want to tidy it up by adding the commas. Everyking 18:30, 21 Jul 2004 (UTC)

Ordering Succession Tables

[edit]

With British personages, we've always put it in chronological order. There are separate boxes dealing with PMs and Presidents, so it's not as though this will become especially confusing. The problem with doing it in order of importance is that, after president, it becomes hard to say which is the most important. Presumably VP is more important than anything else. But what if someone was, say, Secretary of State and Chief Justice (e.g. John Marshall)? Both positions are pretty important...so which comes first? Just doing it chronologically seems simpler. With categories, on the other hand, I'd suggest they be listed in some sort of defined order based on importance (perhaps using the United States order of precedence as a model. That way, we can have both. I'd add that we should always include the dates for these tables, no matter how we choose to do it - otherwise it can be very confusing. john k 11:55, 26 Jul 2004 (UTC)

II, III

[edit]

I don't think there's an entry in the naming conventions for this, so which is the proper format for a name with a II, III, etc, that isn't a royal name? Article in question is John H. Bankhead, II. Should it be with or without the comma? I note that "with" comma takes up the bulk of redirects to Bill Gates, but the article itself mentions him as William Henry Gates III, no comma. Any suggestions? --Golbez 02:38, 21 Jul 2004 (UTC)

The more common practice is not to use commas before II, III, etc. (unlike Jr. or Sr. where it's the other way around), so I would use John Smith III (but John Smith, Jr.). A redirect from the other version is always useful, of course. Gzornenplatz 03:23, Jul 21, 2004 (UTC)

US Congressional Delegations by state articles

[edit]

Hi there, I noticed you've been doing some great work developing these. Right now, there is a redundancy, however, with all the lists of Senators by state. Does anyone have any plans to delete or redirect these? Because we can cross-categorize the congressional delegations articles under both Senators and Representatives by state categories, those can now serve the functions that separate articles would as far as navigability and classification. One further thing that does need to be done with the congressional delegations articles though is alphabetizing them so they are properly organized in the categories. Thanks! Info

[edit]

Are you getting your info from any specific place? I just got mine from NOAA. The whole change like that insinuates that I'm a liar. Mike H 17:31, Aug 13, 2004 (UTC)

The NHC, which may have different info from NOAA, but I trust more. NOAA probably filters the NHC advisories for better public consumption; check http://www.nhc.noaa.gov/. I'm not insinuating anything at all, but the information is probably identical (70 miles SSW of Ft Myers is probably close to 240 miles SSW of Orlando), though I don't know why the speeds would be different. The NHC advisory also didn't mention possible strengthening to cat 4. However, I will change "late" to afternoon. I was in the middle of writing the article and got an edit conflict with numbers I didn't recognize, but mine matched the NHC, so I decided to go with mine. What URL did you get your number sfrom? One error I made though, the storm IS moving NNE instead of North as I put.
I did not mean to imply at all that you were a liar, the numbers were just unfamiliar to me. I figured the NHC should be the primary source for such numbers, unless they've changed since the last advisory. --Golbez 17:38, 13 Aug 2004 (UTC)

Joschka Fischer

[edit]

Hi, the German constitution says it is illegal to start a war aggression. There were some suits against Fischer (and Schröder) because of the Kosovo war, but as far as I know, they either were not accepted by the courts or the German participation in the Kosovo war was ruled as unconstitutional because it wasn't war aggression. But it is a widely spread issue in the German peace movement, so protests against the German participation and especially against red/green and Fischer pushing this should be mentioned in the Joschka Fischer article. I think the form you found is more NPOV than the previous edit, but may be seen different by others. -- till we | Talk 21:11, 14 Aug 2004 (UTC)

The former version (before the prev edit and your edit) was also NPOV, but it is true that Fischer justified (and still justifies) the German engagement in the war with an Auschwitz reference, so the new version has more information. -- till we | Talk 21:16, 14 Aug 2004 (UTC)

Will Rogers

[edit]

FYI--When making the William Rogers (disambiguation) page, I found Will Rogers, Jr. listed on your page of congressmen from California when the official bioguide site says he represented Oklahoma and there doesn't appear to be a similar delegation page for the Sooner State. I didn't change anything because I do not know myself. I've posted a note on the delegation discussion page as well.

I also noted you liked to put in the "preceded/succeded by" boxes. So do I. I've gone through and listed them for every associate justice of the Supreme Court. See John McLean for an article I wrote and one of my boxes. Ave!

Will Rogers, Redux

[edit]

Thanks for the clarification regarding Will Rogers, Jr. I did have William Vann Rogers, Jr., on my disambiguation page. Didn't click with me that could be Will Rogers Jr. So far I've got about a dozen people on my William Rogers disambiguation page. Now I'm working on a John Clarke (disambiguation) page. One was on the Supreme Court John Hessin Clarke, which is how I came to the subject.

I can imagine the Illinois congressional delegation would be a bear; it's been a very populous state for a very long time--I imagine they, New York, Pennsylvania and my state of Ohio would have the most total congressmen. Good luck with the rest of the delegations. Ave! PedanticallySpeaking 20:15, Aug 24, 2004 (UTC)

Congressmen Everywhere

[edit]

I checked my "Congressional Directory" for the table listing how many members of Congress (House and Senate both) each state has had and, as of October 2001, these are the leaders:

1. New York, 1454 2. Pennsylvania, 1042 3. Ohio, 669 4. Illinois, 479 5. Massachusetts, 431 6. Virginia, 430 7. New Jersey, 358 8. Missouri, 332

What are you working from in compiling these lists? The on-line Bioguide? The several volumes of the atlas of Congressional districts?

Ave! PedanticallySpeaking 14:15, Aug 26, 2004 (UTC)

Congressional Atlas

[edit]

Kenneth C. Martis edited a big fat atlas charting the Congressional districts of every state from their admission to 1983. It lists every congressman by district and their tenure. Here's the record copied from the Library of Congress catalog:

Martis, Kenneth C. The historical atlas of United States Congressional districts, 1789-1983 / author and editor, Kenneth C. Martis ; cartographer and assistant editor, Ruth Anderson Rowles ; compilation draftsmen, David Durham, Brian Raber, Thomas Kokernak ; research assistants, Rowland Dent ... [et al.]. New York : Free Press ; London : Collier Macmillan, c1982. 1 atlas (xiii, 302 p.) : maps (some col.) ; 35 x 47 cm.

ISBN: 0029201705

If your library does not have it, you might try to request it through inter-library loan. You might have some trouble because most libraries would class it as a non-circulating reference book, but it's worth a try.

I don't know if you're interested in the CSA congress, but Martis also did a similiar book on it.

What's the advantage of/reason to change <br> into <br /> that I occasionally see on some pages? I know XML requires a closing tag in that fashion, but is that the reason? -- Golbez

Yes. Tags without a closing tag must close themselves with the trailing slash for XML (and thus XHTML) conformance. -- Cyrius| 14:33, 27 Aug 2004 (UTC)
It's not necessary here, MediaWiki automatically puts it there if it isn't there already. Goplat 15:10, 27 Aug 2004 (UTC)

Some us have a lot of occasion (outside wiki-land) to hand-write XML (including XHTML). Someone (including me) might be editing for other purposes and change <br> to <br /> almost by reflex. -- Jmabel 21:26, Aug 27, 2004 (UTC)

Hi Golbez. I've moved the above discussion here as it was time to clean the Village pump. Angela. 14:33, Sep 1, 2004 (UTC)

I saw you wondering why some edit links in templates were removed. I think the idea with edit links is that they should be placed in templates that are ideally updated quite often.

[edit]

A template like Template:West Indies should not have to be updated very often, since the information presented is pretty much definite, information about existence of countries and dependencies will probably not change more than a few times a decade. A template that should have an edit link is template:album since that info is constantly updated. siroχo 06:12, Sep 7, 2004 (UTC)

I can live with that; However, the same argument could be said about an article that is simply a list of countries. Those still have edit links. And the template would have an edit link still; it would just be simpler to access. But you are correct as well. I won't fight to keep the edit link, as useful as I find it. :) --Golbez 06:14, Sep 7, 2004 (UTC)

Well, I only added it back in cases where it said neither American politician nor U.S. state. I tend to prefer the former in most cases, actually, but I'm fine with either one. Everyking 20:30, 20 Sep 2004 (UTC)

Yeah, I see your point, it's not always ideal; for example, there are cases in which it's hard to uncontroversially apply a general descriptive term to a person. But I like it because it starts the reader off with a basic, general description of the person, as opposed to immediately pinning them down to one notable thing. In most cases, I like a first sentence wording that starts off by giving the nationality and occupation (or some general descriptive term for whatever they are known for), then tells whatever specific thing they are most notable for. From an international perspective, John Howard, Gerhard Schroeder and Jacques Chirac all go with that style, while Tony Blair, Vladimir Putin and Hu Jintao don't. Everyking 20:51, 20 Sep 2004 (UTC)

If you check, only thing he does is write about how Koreans were victimzed. It is quite interesting as his IP turned out to be from "Evergreen Medical Group Inc. EMG-83-16 (NET-4-23-83-0-1) 4.23.83.0 - 4.23.83.255 ", either he is doing his writing while hospitalized or while on a job. If you can, I suggest you simply block the IP, I think a company can manage itself without wikipedia. Revth 09:30, 6 Oct 2004 (UTC)

I suppose you're techically right, but everytime someone's gone back and "fixed" my old articles that way, they generally look better, so for once I beat Everyking et al to the punch and did it myself, but will defer to you on the basis that, at least techically, you're right. Maybe the software will be where it can resolve all of this for us soon, in light of the sucessful recent fundraising especially.

Hey Golbez, I've noticed that you did lots of reverts of 4.23.83.100's edits because of bias. Not all of his/her edits are biased, and some contain factual additions. Instead of doing complete reverts, how about picking and choosing which of the additions to keep, and then fixing the NPOV sections? --Yuje 02:39, 19 Oct 2004 (UTC)

Raul654 has interpreted tropical cyclone's FAC nomination as a failure. It was closer than most articles, and I wasn't terribly happy with it anyway. Since the start of hurricane season, nearly the entire article has been taken apart, rearranged, and rewritten. I think it needs some time to settle down.

It just needs to be ready for a front page spot come June 1, 2005 :) -- Cyrius| 06:28, 19 Oct 2004 (UTC)

Railroad station article deleted

[edit]

Hello Golbez, As an author of articles on subway stations, you might be interested to know that an article on a railway station, Route 128 Station, was recently deleted from Wikipedia by a vote of 4 to 2 (I voted against deletion, as did the author). The reasons the voters gave for deletion were

 1. It's an advertisement for a railway station. (Huh?)
 2. It's non-notable. (That's not in the policy as a reason for deletion.)
 3. Wikipedia is not a travel guide. (Right, but what does that have to do with the station?)

The article was well organized and written. It covered a station on a line connecting Washington, New York and Boston.

I've put a lot of work into articles on Tokyo subways, and would not want to start a project on stations given that they might be deleted at any time. I'm surprised by the decision and wonder what fate awaits other articles on railway and subway stations.

Old article is here

"redundant" categories

[edit]

Placing an article in the categories that its eponymous category belongs to is not redundant—it is necessary to properly categorize it. Categories perform two functions:

1) They classify articles. Washington, DC is not merely a topic of Category:Washington, DC, but is instead a member of all categories that its own category would belong to. These relationships need to be visible on the article itself just as much as on its category. Otherwise, it is not clear from the article's classification that Washington, DC is anything more than sui generis. It is a city in the United States, as well as a political division of the U.S., and its categories should make that clear.

2) Categories group together common subjects and ease navigation. Anyone visiting Washington, DC should be able to go directly from that article to see other members in any series of which Washington, DC itself is one, as well as to see any article of which DC is the parent topic. Removing all but its own category not only adds in an unnecessary extra step, but visitors unfamiliar with a topic will not know at a glance, as is supposed to happen with categories, what groups that article belongs to, or whether there are even more articles of that series on wikipedia.

A truly redundant category would be a parent of a subcategory to which the article only belongs to. The article is only one of the series of the subcategory, and so is only subordinate to it rather than an equal to it to be placed within the parent. An example would be placing Georgetown, Washington, DC in both Category:Washington, DC and Category:Washington, DC neighborhoods. There are of course some exceptions to this rule (i.e., United States Constitution is justifiably in the base Category:United States as well as under Category:United States law, Category:United States history, and its own Category:U.S. Constitution. Thanks! Postdlf 23:50, 19 Oct 2004 (UTC)

Slavery, Cotton Gin, Nat Turner, Eli Whitney

[edit]

Were your reverts simply because of its lack of integration with the existing article? The material reverted out appears interesting, not badly written - is it not factual? Let me know what you think, I could spend a bit of time properly integrating this material. This may be a new user shy about touching existing text. Please respond here, I will watch, just tickle my user talk with a minor message. Sincerely, Leonard G. 03:52, 26 Oct 2004 (UTC)

P.S. I saw your comments on the IP user's page - it seemed rather harsh, especially considering that additional details were being added. Rather than completely reverting, the inclusion of a small amount of material would have been encouraging. Your approach and commentary is not the way to integrate IP editors into our community as registered users. Leonard G. 03:57, 26 Oct 2004 (UTC)

I looked at each article and found that, with the exception of one (Spiritual (music)), the additions offered nothing more than what was included in the article. If there was a fact I missed, please point it out, but I didn't see any. They seemed to be three line summaries of what the article just discussed. I suppose I could have been nicer, but at least I gave a response; he'd already been reverted twice without a mention. I shall probably clarify my note. --Golbez 04:00, Oct 26, 2004 (UTC)

It looks as if your good work, like mine and others on "Bicycles", got blown out of the water on the Sea of "Featured articles". I got pretty pissed at some of the pissy stuff people call one on, but I guess some folks don't like reading what an American has to say about something worldwide, like bikes and storms. I now know lots more (than I needed to know) about bicycles in other countries. The only thing I am left still steaming about from that experience is the one yahoo who entered a new "object" vote atop each of his (mostly lame) comments. After multiple rewrites, it ended up 7-2, but looked like about 7-8 due to this one bozo. Hang in there.Sfahey 03:36, 5 Nov 2004 (UTC)

Wikinews demo up and running

[edit]

Hi!

I'm writing to let you know that the Wikimedia Board of Trustees has approved the first stage of the Wikinews project. There's now a fully operational English demo site at demo.wikinews.org. This will be used for experimenting with various review models and basic policies before the site is launched officially in about a week. demo.wikinews.org will become the English version later.

You voted for the Wikinews project, so I'm asking for your participation now. Everything is open, nothing is final. What Wikinews will and can be depends in large part on you. There already is a global Wikinews mailing list for discussing the project. If you are interested at all, please subscribe -- coordination is of key importance. There's also an IRC channel #wikinews on irc.freenode.net. Realtime discussion can help to polish up articles.

If you're looking for something to do, check out the articles in development and articles in review. Or start a new story in the Wikinews workspace, or ignore the proposed review system - it's up to you. I hope you'll join us soon in this exciting experiment.--Eloquence* 01:58, Nov 17, 2004 (UTC)

The old blueprints are talking about a ship that is not of the same size as the current ISD. Furthermore more recent offical literature clearly labels the ship as the Imperial class. Hi Golbez. Regarding September 11 2001 attacks article, I'm not sure if you reverted my edit just now accidentally or not, so I've managed to restore my edits. Article Licensing

[edit]

Hi, I've started a drive to get users to multi-license all of their contributions that they've made to either (1) all U.S. state, county, and city articles or (2) all articles, using the Creative Commons Attribution-Share Alike (CC-by-sa) v1.0 and v2.0 Licenses or into the public domain if they prefer. The CC-by-sa license is a true free documentation license that is similar to Wikipedia's license, the GFDL, but it allows other projects, such as WikiTravel, to use our articles. Since you are among the top 1000 Wikipedians by edits, I was wondering if you would be willing to multi-license all of your contributions or at minimum those on the geographic articles. Over 90% of people asked have agreed. For More Information:

To allow us to track those users who muli-license their contributions, many users copy and paste the "DualLicenseWithCC-BySA-Dual" template into their user page, but there are other options at Template messages/User namespace. The following examples could also copied and pasted into your user page:

Option 1
I agree to multi-license all my contributions, with the exception of my user pages, as described below:
DualLicenseWithCC-BySA-Dual

OR

Option 2
I agree to multi-license all my contributions to any U.S. state, county, or city article as described below:
DualLicenseWithCC-BySA-Dual

Or if you wanted to place your work into the public domain, you could replace "DualLicenseWithCC-BySA-Dual" with "MultiLicensePD". If you only prefer using the GFDL, I would like to know that too. Please let me know what you think at my talk page. It's important to know either way so no one keeps asking. -- Ram-Man (comment| talk) 18:08, Dec 8, 2004 (UTC)

Maps

[edit]

Well, its quite a complex (or rather, long-winded) technique I use. I draw the maps massively oversize using a soft paint tool in the gimp. I then reduce the colour depth to 1-bit, up it back again to 24-bit, fill in the colour and resize downwards (thus they end up nicely antialiased). You can see some of my intermediate blown up blank maps at Wikipedia:Blank maps somewhere. Morwen - Talk 16:21, 23 Dec 2004 (UTC)

City of Washington DC Layout

[edit]

Hello-

I have reverted the Washington DC page to include the use of diagonal Avenues in its defense. This idea is covered by the national building museum and numerous texts. It is important to include this as the city in District of Columbia was conceived using warfare standards for defense formed in the 18th century. Unlike Paris, which grew from village to national capitol, Washington (city) was designed from the beginning (and purposfully) with visual sightlines.

James Goode has also dicussed this facet of the design at several of his lectures, most recently upon the reissue of Capitol Losses. The National Building Museuum also discusses this in the book issued to coincide with their permanent display, Washington: The Making of a City, although I can not find it on their web site.

I did find this reference in a Washington DC Junior League history on the city: "Charles L'Enfant drew on the magnificance remembered from the Versailles of his childhood. (Thomas) Jefferson... urging wider avenues and broader vistas..." Does this help? Hope so...

Best regards,

Stude62

I can't get to it any other way within Wikipedia (neither via Go nor Search)...--Pbrooks 06:17, 19 Jan 2005 (UTC)

I marked this article as needing cleanup because it reads like original research. This in itself is not bad, but it definitely needs reworking. It's full of HTML, and worse, full of first-person mentions. ("we will use the phrase nugget of information", "This will enable us to refer", etc.) I tried to clean it myself but got bogged down in trying to figure out a more neutral way to state things. --Golbez 20:57, Jan 20, 2005 (UTC)

"We" and "us" used in that way are not first-person at all; they are not to be taken literally. It is commonplace in writing mathematics to use such locutions involving first-person plural pronouns without intending them literally. Michael Hardy 23:38, 20 Jan 2005 (UTC)

Don't know about that article on "black flight." It's not a phrase in common use. Gentrification is more like it. "White flight" -- yes, but don't know about a black version (unless they're runnin' away from rents, mortgages and property taxes they can no longer afford)! Actually, decent affordable housing is hard to find, period; it's a regional problem for the middle-class and the poor -- teachers, firefighters, secretaries, etc. And the only white flight that's occurring is back inside the beltway, of well-heeled (mostly white) professionals displacing retirees, families with young children (who also leave because of the crappy schools), people on fixed incomes and old communities of color. deeceevoice 19:47, 10 Feb 2005 (UTC)

I know what you mean about flag. I honestly was nowhere near as negative about your presence as I know I came across, there was something about the atmosphere on flag that encourages that kind of contention (it is one of the reasons I left actually, along with a couple other regulars). I know you tried on the anarcho-capitalist article, and I appreciate it. That article needs more ancaps like yourself. There is another gentlemen named Radgeek who does a terrific job with his edits and is also pro-anarcho-capitalist, but I think the constant struggle bogs him down as well. You might want to try to work with him in the future, I think you will find him both knowledgable and reasonable. I don't blame you for shying away from these topics, they drive me crazy. I myself found it so easy to get wrapped up in the wars that go on over controversial articles that I have limited myself to editing only articles directly related to anarchism, sorta the opposite way of dealing with the problem I suppose.

Anyway, I wouldn't really worry, there have been several RJ types come and gone over the past couple years I've been on wiki. I would only ask that you come back and try again in a month or a few months when the whole thing has settled down. I also take extended breaks from the article, so if my presence frustrates you there are still ample opportunities to avoid it =) I certainly won't agree with all your edits, but I look forward to the opportunity of having that article rewritten by someone both knowledgable about that particular subject, sympathic to its cause, and reasonable to other points of view. Hi Golbez, I gather that you are doing beautiful things with maps. I disagree in your asseration that the "old" bank should remain as a history in the case of only a name change. NationsBank IS Bank of America. It simply changed names when it purchased BankAmerica. The Bank of America page was confusing without the NationsBank information because someone just put in the BankAmerica information (and acutally used Bank of America and BankAmerica interchangeably, which was incorrect). I did not delete the NationsBank history. It is now included in the Bank of America page (since Bank of America and NationsBank are the same company).

I would advocate your position for BankAmerica because, as a company, it is defunct (NationsBank is not defunct...it just changed names). Obviously, in a merger, one company always survives and consumes the other.

When companies merge, I think it creates a lot of confusion. I think the easiest (and least confusing) is to have a page with the new companies name, with the history of both previous (major) companies on the same page. This allows a reader to get a full history without having to link to several different pages.

First Union/Wachovia

[edit]

Thank you for your comments. Again, my reasoning for assimilating the First Union information into the Wachovia article is because Wachovia IS First Union.

That Wachovia page technically deals with what used to be First Union, and then changed its name to Wachovia. I guess I am thinking linearly in that: Pre-2001, Wachovia page deals with Wachovia Corp based in Winston-Salem, First Union page deals with First Union based in Charlotte.

2001, Old Wachovia no longer exists, First Union changes name to Wachovia. (So I see the Wachovia page as dealing with the NEW Wachovia/OLD First Union as opposed to the OLD Wachovia)

Again, I think it is an easier read when companies merge to combine the histories onto one page. Especially with FU because it took the name of the bank it was purchasing (having FU backgound in Wachovia article is important to understand why First Union changed its name to someone who doesn't understand it)

 • By the way, I have pulled off the Legacy Wachovia logo from their old website. Perhaps you would like to clean it up a bit and post it in history section of the Wachovia article? 69.134.50.153 20:36, 18 Apr 2005 (UTC)

Taiwan is part of China

[edit]

It has yet to achive independance. (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Taiwan_independence)

The official UN and USA stance is that there is only 1 China. And the communists in Beijing is the sole legal government of China, including Taiwan, Hong Kong and Macao.

Further, the USA has specifically said on many occasions that it does not support Taiwan independance.

You may want to read up on that point, if you're not already well versed on it. But this should be settled ancient history going back to the Nixon administration...

Ps - Please self revert edits you made which run contrary to this point.

I see you "cleaned up" a little, effectively reverting the thing to what it was before Haham hanuka started editing it and I edited in response. (Well, almost.) Mind you, I couldn't disagree more with HH, but do you really see no merit in elaborating on the cause of WW II? Mentioning the declaration of war in response doesn't seem overly unbalancing. I've got a copy of the 1851 to 2003 "HURDAT" file, and a small program I wrote to parse out information like "maximum winds" for a storm (or for all storms in a given year). So getting that for 1953-79 wouldn't be hard.
It looks like with the 2004 update, they've added a newer and less horrible format option. Hmm.

Germany

[edit]

Congratulations for your efforts to clean up the Germany section. I tried it once, but some people (read Heimdal) immediately started an edit war. Since then, I abandoned the hope to see the Germany article improve, but now I have new hope. Be assured of my support to uphold your improvements. Luis rib 16:58, 24 May 2005 (UTC)[reply]

The history section should NOT be a disconnected incoherent accumulation of events happened in Germany if you've understood it like this. A revolution broke out? Why? Like you explained it, it must have been the consequence of a second big bang. The revolutions, especially the French one, were the main catalyst of the German revolution. The population wanted a republic badly. The French, for example, got a republic with the aid of a revolution. It's not that hard to understand. Why did you delete Metternich? This German was the most prominent politician for decades. I could understand if you deleted an enumeration of all the reforms and liberal movements that happened, but that was a SUMMARY. This century, because of its complexity called the "long 19th century" is of great importance for the German history. It is the only one who gives reasons for the second thiry-years-war (WW1&WW2) as a growing number of historians refer to it. I wonder why you were not picky in regard with "Third Reich". I would love to show you a summary of Germany from a book covering two pages to give you an idea how the proportion should be. Would that somehow be okay without violating the copyright?NightBeAsT 18:35, 2 Jun 2005 (UTC)

I copied this from the German wikipedia of de:Metternich.

I don't know if you can speak German but in the English wikipedia the text should be similar. Basically Metternich's significance can even be justified in one term: the embodiment of the restoration. The liberal and democratic forces, and Metternich's went back and forth. Metternich was the leading person in the German Confederation. He initiated the Karlsbader Beschlüsse, which repressed the intellectuals (professors and students), censored books, magazines and newspapers and had revolutionary movements by a commission observed. Everyone who was against the Restauration was repressed by the following "Demagogengesetze", especially the intellectuals, who could lose the right to learn (students) and the right to teach (professors). Later the Kalsbader Beschlüsse were fortified.

The German revolution was not only carried by the revolution in France although that provided them the prospect of a revolution. Prior to that the horrors of the French Revolution didn't really persuade people to try a revolution. In the new French revolution the military, however, remained idle though. Also or especially mass poverty and famines were the reasons for the German revolutions (not uncommon in Europe at all around 1848). People like Büchner demanded political change. The "uprising of the silesian weavers 1844" was one result of the famine. This protest was beaten down by the princes. Heinrich Heine ... Karl Marx ... this leads to the "social question" and this, in turn, to the completely understated Industrial Revolution, which is nothing but the first step of the stated industrialization. Where is the Enlightenment in the article by the way? Prussia was the first to carry it out even if its origin were in France. And you want to summarize THOSE sections rather than war reports of WW2 or the Weimarer Republik? The book I talked about reserved one of two sides for Germany in the middle ages. The second makes up one fourth for "The Revolution of 1848", one fifth for "The German Empire", one fourth for "National socialism and second world war" and one fifth for "Division and reunification", the rest for captions and a list of Presidents and chancellors since 1949. I'm afraid, I cannot recognize a similar proportion in the German history article. The book I talked about is not German, but was translated. Its original title is "The Dorling Kindersley History of the World". To prove I didn't lie about that proportion, I can scan these two pages tomorrow, somehow portray them and you can delete them after seing it. Or is this little copyright violation that certainly nobody would mind because it could even be seen as advertisement intolerable?NightBeAsT 20:18, 2 Jun 2005 (UTC)

No, I mean a scan of two pages. Except for their proportion they resemble the history section of the Germany article very much (esp. the pictures) and the pages could be used as a guideline on how the history section should be basically proportioned. Of course it could immediately after seing what the proportion is be deleted. I don't know much about copyright but just showing two pages and deleting what was showed right after, would that be acceptable? I don't know how I could prove it otherwise. Or would it be enough to state the ISBN as proof?NightBeAsT 20:50, 2 Jun 2005 (UTC)

Hello. Sorry, have been away over the weekend. In reply to your post. There is an ongoing disagreement on the Germany page as to how long the article should be. Some would like to reduce the page to no longer than 32KB, others (me included) would like to expand it further. You appear to be on the side of those who want to shorten the article. However, as I've explained on the talk page already, the Germany article (current size: 45KB) is not really so long as to justify the deletions and the shortening. Some articles are much longer, actually: see France, which was 51KB long the last time I've checked it, or the United States page (55KB). That's the reason why I've continued to revert you. So here's my suggestion. In the absence of a consensus, let the page move back and forth between two versions for some time: between a longer and a shorter version. Allow the people who use and read the article to make up their own mind about which version is better, and which one they want to edit. I for my part would revert the page no more than once a day. Also when reverting, I would make sure to save the edits by other users. With time, consensus may be found, and the article may stabilise. - Heimdal 09:29, 6 Jun 2005 (UTC)

Telling Metro Trains Apart

[edit]

The different kinds of Metro trains can be told apart by their appearance and sounds.

On the exterior, Rohr cars have a metal edge around the cab windows, and have two sign windows on the sides (one is converted to a speaker). On the interior, Rohr cars have the orange interior, extra side-facing seats near the doors, extra windscreens, and metal handrails on top of the seats. They make a low whine when they take off and arrive.

"Classic" Breda cars (those that have not been rehabilitated) have a rubber edge around the cab windows. The corners are squared off on the 2000 and 3000 series cars, and rounded on the 4000 series cars. These cars also sport the orange interior, with brown rubber handrails on top of the seats. Most of these cars also sport a builder's plate at the ends of the car. These cars make a buzzing sound when taking off and arriving.

The exterior of the CAF cars, numbered in the 5000's, have LED signage instead of flip-dot signs. The black rubber edge around the cab windows is far wider than the Breda cars. The CAF cars sport the new interior color scheme, have a different door chime, and have LED displays inside the car indicating the next station. Listening to the CAFs, these cars make a smooth, high-pitched whine when taking off and arriving.

Those Breda 2000 and 3000 series cars that have been rehabilitated by Alstom have the exterior LED signs like the CAF cars. Additionally, all exterior lights on these rehabilitated cars are LED, except for the headlights. The interior of the car has the new color scheme, with LED displays that, unlike the CAF cars, are flush with the rest of the wall panel. These cars also feature glow-in-the-dark emergency signage on the interior and exterior of the cars. These cars make an interesting sound - they make a high-pitched whine that goes up and down in pitch as they take off and arrive.

There are also 182 (if I'm not mistaken) 6000-series cars that will be arriving in the next few years manufactured by Alstom. These are supposed to have a modified floor configuration, among other changes from previous cars.

Infobox for Joseph Smith, Jr.

[edit]

Hi! Thanks for asking about this. Because of the nature of JS's role in the Latter Day Saint movement, the standard LDSInfobox won't work for him, and templates used in only one article are also frowned on. So I choose to create the subpage because it seemed to be a resonable thing to accomodate the need. If you put the full table in the article it complicates it and is a target for vandalism that is more difficult to fix than the simple reference that is currently used. I know that subpages are frowned on, but this seemed like a good use for the functionality that didn't really mess anything up.

FYI, there is a similar one at Gordon B. Hinckley, and now that the issue of using meta-templates for formatting simplicity seems resolved in favor of keeping them, I was planning on returning that one to LDSInfobox since the LDSInfobox/alive and LDSInfobox/dead are no longer in danger of being listed on TfD. Then I will speedy the GBH/Infobox since I am the primary editor. Trödel|talk 02:28, 3 Jun 2005 (UTC)

Your discussion on speedy overkill

I just ran into a slightly old thread you participated in at [1] In the thread you go out of your way to debate a newbie in an effort to defend the deletions of a few short texts. In particular I'd like you to pay attention to how user Shanes addressed the issue and how it differed from your reply. I believe a typical reader would find your tone hostile and argumentative, and that isn't the image that we want to convey to any editor and especially not to a newbie. In the future please consider your words more carefully, the user in question was trying to help... sure he was wrong, and needs to learn a bit, but beating him with a verbal stick is no way to help him. Re: More on Metro

I actually didn't write that section referring to the P signal in the reverse direction of the pocket track. 84.148.74.227 wrote that. I am, however, going past the Mt. Vernon Square pocket track tomorrow in my travels, as well as past West Falls Church-VT/UVA station (where the center track is essentially a pocket track), and I'll try to get a seat at the end of the train and check 'er out.

I've also posted the question on SubChat, and we'll see what that group comes up with.

Subchat worked! I fixed the unclear comment. Also, it's interesting, with the photo of that CAF train at Metro Center (that works there, when you think about it). I remember that when I took that, they were just beginning to recover from a delay caused by a sick passenger at Farragut North, which required single-tracking around the affected area. I want to say this was the first train going to Shady Grove after two Glenmont trains wrong-railed through. Schuminweb 7 July 2005 21:04 (UTC)

Good call in deciding to go straight to the name page. After all, Hurricane Dennis is in a position to be retired as of now. (I think there will be 5 or 6 names knocked off the list in the 2005 season which would be a record - they will have a lot of work ahead in finding replacement names for the 2011 season). My BOLD predictions as of now - Emily, Franklin, Irene, Katrina and Maria will also join Dennis in the retirement home. CrazyC83 8 July 2005 04:59 (UTC)

It was just taking a lot of time, and I'd (obviously) stopped doing it after quitting wikipedia and now I've come back I haven't started again.

The colour scheme was somewhat random. You will note a pattern for England: red, Scotland: blue, Wales: green, Ireland:green, Northern Ireland: red, that where an obvious 'national colour' was available or a colour that predominated on the flag... i chose that. Apparently however the green maps looked really bad when converted to black-and-white so I stopped doing those. And I started to add the sea to maps, which used blue. Look, the only problem is that there is no proper debate on this, it's too limited. User:Wikibofh started a discussion on criteria for all ethnic lists over at Wikipedia:Village pump (policy), but that has not attracted much interest either. He also left word on the talk pages of other ethnic-American lists, still no response. Think about leaving your thoughts there before you wash your hands of it. Thanks.

Hey Golbez, You reverted some edits by anon 209.67.*.* back to me, and he and White Knight keep trying to reinstate those edits. I don't care about the textual edits, though on first glance they don't seem at all neutral, but changing all the URLs on the page to redirect through a third-party server that both screws up the destination and prolly does some tracking is simple vandalism, in my opinion. I've said that I'll revert such edits on sight as vandalism (in my edit summaries), but they keep asking me to explain. I don't really think this warrants discussion, but I'd like another opinion. Could you also keep an eye on this page?--MikeJ9919 18:08, 13 July 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Basically, take the top two coffers of the six-coffer arch design, turn them perpendicular to the normal direction, and set them in rows. I should mention the architecture for Anacostia in the article, but I'm trying to figure out a good way to say it. Schuminweb 22:28, 18 July 2005 (UTC)[reply]

WMATA arches

[edit]

As far as sites that list what kinds of arches the various stations use, nycsubway.org uses the term "waffle" for the most familiar style of arch, "Arch I" for the four-coffer arch found in seven stations along the western Red Line (Medical Center to Woodley Park-Zoo), "Arch II" to denote the six-coffer arch found at several more-recent stations (Columbia Heights, Georgia Avenue-Petworth, Mt. Vernon Square, Congress Heights, Glenmont), and "Arch III" to denote the smaller four-coffer arch that is based on the six-coffer arch's design (Forest Glen, Wheaton, Fort Totten Lower Level).

My site also uses the term "waffle", but I stay away from the arch-number term, preferring to say "four-coffer arch" or "six-coffer arch". But my site lists the different styles as well.

WP project subnational entities

[edit]

thanks for your last post on my talk page. It's a mess with all this distribute talk, he? Maybe we should better work on a naming conventions page. Some arguments I allready heard hundred times and answered them hundred times. Structured page for the arguments would be fine. I myself am not sure whether uppercase is good in some cases. Especially bracket disambig looks fine if something is not part of the official name. Most talks I had, were like: "My country is different". I think a general rule like "if it is not part of the official name" use lowercase or brackets, would be different. This actually would be a global approach. May other people do this. ... The whole thing is really not easy. Tobias Conradi (Talk) 21:54, 19 July 2005 (UTC)[reply]

United States

[edit]

Just a friendly reminder to assume good faith when anonymous users edit articles. In the case of your reversion of United States, it would have been very easy to take a quick look at Google News or another news home page to verify that the edit was, in fact, true. Remember, not all anon users know what that "edit summary" field is for.—chris.lawson (talk) 15:35, 21 July 2005 (UTC)[reply]

I was assuming good faith -- too much of it ;) I know I can have a quick trigger finger at times on anonymous editors myself, and I had just seen the story three or four times in my RSS reader, which is why it struck me as a mite odd that it got reverted so quickly. At any rate, it's fixed now. I'll be seeing you around, I'm sure. Happy editing! —chris.lawson (talk) 23:51, 21 July 2005 (UTC)[reply]

 • thx for liking that I'm focussed.
 • calling something stupid or a person is different, and actually you said I called someone stupid because he simply had another opinion.
 • I called the poll stupid. may this was not political correct. but I felt a lot of work would be done without deeper analysis. what I did on Italy was up for one or two month on the talk page. 3 person discussed it. one neutral, me in favor, the other at first unclear than opposed. And this very third person User:Docu did not respond when I asked him who are the 2 persons oppsoing that he mentioned. And there was none. so it was 1:1:1. And Italy being the only system together with switzerland having "Province of X". So I moved the stuff. Then one person changed one province back and the discussions started. Other people came in, and said, oh but italy is different. Don't care what is done in the rest of WP-subdivisions. ... well one day we could create a poll with users from ALL subdivisions and maybe revert italy again. that's why i called this poll stupid. Polls are not analysing situations.
 • "Well you don't like that, I don't care" - I admit I sometimes have this attitude. Might be good, might be bad. I want quality and facts. Just feeling from the stomach is not all. ... George Bush vandal blocking

[edit]

Yeah, maybe. I don't know. I don't think it's right of us to make exceptions to the blocking policy for some special articles. Allthough, if exceptions were to be made, the GBW article is indeed a good candidate. Shanes 20:43, 27 July 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Yeah, you may have a point. And I'm also a fan of WP:IAR from time to time. The problem, as I see it, is that this could create precedence and encourage people to put in that "one strike rule" in the header of all "their" articles, and then we'd be off to have created a new pollicy with this exception. But, I'm not fanatic about this at all, and I'm not going to go against you and remove your comment or anything. I guess it can be up to each admin to decide. And I definetely agree with you about keeping the article unprotected. Cheers. Shanes 21:01, 27 July 2005 (UTC)[reply]

AH

[edit]

I agree with your rv [3] of user:Deus Ex's edit. I think it doesn't "feel" right because it's a) wordy for a header and b) seems to contain a bit of PoV creep. I'm also uncomfortable with the cult of personality reference. It's non-standard, and used in this sort of context could be applied to most successful politicians. Wyss 00:28, 28 July 2005 (UTC)[reply]

"i explained my changes, you would do well to explain yours". I'm not sure what you mean by this-your rationale for revertion originally was the presence of "however", which I removed. Too me, "there's just something that doesn't work about deus ex's changes", is not an explanation, it is an excuse which I cannot decipher into meaning anything specific. Reverting to the original "in the name of "flowery prose"" is not an acceptable reason for revertioin. What specifically is wrong with my changes?

Since I've now noticed Wyss's post above, I'll respond to that and explain the intro changes. I was trying to make the intro less POV, not more. "Under Hitler's leadership, Germany ascended from the depths of post-World War I defeat and economic crisis to become one of the world's most powerful nations" is a vague and POV sentence, so I figured to replace that with summarising (few briefly) Hitler's major accomplishments. Maybe the wording wasn't perfect, but that was not a reason simply to revert back something along the lines of "one of the world's most powerful nations". Deus Ex 00:51, 28 July 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks for the speedy respnses. Shall I revert to my version then? If you don't have any major objections of the changes in principle, then I can revert-and subsqeuently the details of the wording of AH's 'accomplishments' can be changed (which I assume is what you and Wyss disagreed over). Deus Ex 01:00, 28 July 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Well, to be honest I don't see why "Under Hitler's leadership Germany ascended from the depths of post-World War I defeat and economic crisis to rebuild its decimated military" is better than "Under Hitler's leadership, Germany's massive unemployment was vastly reduced, and the country undertook a huge programme of military rearmament." Isn't in better to state that unemployment was reduced (by far the most important economic accomplishment) rather than vaguely say "ascended from the depths of post-World War I defeat and economic crisis". Concerning the military, it was an economic programme (a Four Year Plan) so isn't it better to say "huge programme of military rearmament" instead of "rebuild its decimated military". I also don't see the reason for not using my version of the first paragraph-why isn't it an improvement on the original version. Deus Ex 01:16, 28 July 2005 (UTC)[reply]

I've only just noticed this now, but why were the other (not from the lead section) edits reverted? Deus Ex 01:23, 28 July 2005 (UTC)[reply]

OK thanks Golbez. I'll let you restore the non-intro changes if you don't mind, its in the small hours of the morning here in England! I still think at least some of the intro edits are an improvement though, but I need some sleep now.Deus Ex 01:42, 28 July 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Commas... the ones I removed weren't needed. Some see this as esthetics, but in general fewer commas are needed for clarity than we think and it can help the flow. This is not a big deal to me btw ;) Wyss 01:54, 28 July 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Argentine province naming convention + Tobias

[edit]

Thanks for the offer. I get pissed off very easily these days. I replied to Tobias in my talk page and then I got a message from him saying I was treating him as if he were stupid. I told Tobias I was tired of pointless debating and "quit". Then he replied to me in a completely different tone. I'm not sure what he read first. In any case, I'm keeping my word. If I can resist it, I won't touch the issue of naming conventions with a stick from two meters away in the foreseeable future.

The thing is, I believe that naming conventions should be decided on a country basis. I don't believe a province is the same thing in any two countries, even though the structure might be similar and the name of the administrative division is the same, or a cognate. And I think the word "province" should be strictly disambiguational in the title (the article of course has to give the official name). This is being discussed at Wikipedia talk:Argentina-related regional notice board. You're welcome to give an opinion.

Afghanistan

[edit]

With respect to naming conventions for those articles, I agree that it's currently inconsistent but I'm not sure I'm qualified to define policy. I would suggest that we remove 'Province' from the article names but leave the full names in as redirects. That would seem to be most consistent with the US and Canada naming conventions. The only question is how many conflicts there will be if the top-level administrative districts (states, provinces, etc.) of each country in the world is all in the same namespace without disambiguation (Province, Country), but that's really no different whether or not the "Province" qualifier is in the name.

What I don't know is whether this actually makes sense when you look at the province names in the local languages. Let's pretend for a moment that the US had a state with an ethnic name. Say, Cherokee Territory. Obviously we would reduce that to just "Cherokee" as a name, but that will then be both a name for an ethnic group and for an administrative district. The same thing happens in Canada with Northwest Territories. I don't know whether, in the local Afghan languages, any of the province names cause that same problem. Probably not, but useful to think about before setting a blanket policy. JRP

The Moon

[edit]

Thanks for adding that information about the moon. I mean seriously - what I added, what you added, or what anyone could add that simply refers to a 'higher being' and 'creation' is so benign - they can't be mad!

It is totally unfair to remove religion from everything. A specific faith doesn't have to be endorsed, but geez, these people flip out if you say 'diety' or anything referencing to a religious belief!

It is disgusting and makes Wikipedia very similar to Communist Russia or China. If you can, please protect that tidbit of info, b/c they will revert it all day long. So many who landed on the moon, including the 2nd person to walk on the moon Buzz Aldrin, believe that the moon was created by a higher being.

So, yeah. I'm done now. Thanks for the help, and if you can use your admin powers, protect it! THANKS!

Guatemala

[edit]

I know Guatemala a bit (more than other CA countries and Mexico, less than Honduras), all in all about 7 months, but I am not sure that helps as I never talked much about departments to people. It is department of Escuintla (departamento de Escuintla), but when one talks about Escuintla one is talking about the city, which is where we have problems. Sacatepéquez is easy because only the department isa called that. I don't have any easy answers, and mostly think it should be department because wikipedia tends to follow this rule, eg Rastafari movement not Rastafari Movement. Spanish does use the non-capitalisation much more extensively than English, so it would be En el departamento de Escuintla. Maybe we should find something that doesn't directly incorporate department such as Escuintla, Guatemala or Escuintla (department), I prefer the latter, SqueakBox 17:18, August 3, 2005 (UTC)

on the other hand it is not "new York city" and not black river and not "county of orange" but "County of Orange" (official) and Orange County (more colloquial). Tobias Conradi (Talk) 23:47, 6 August 2005 (UTC)[reply]

First, Google is your friend. The governor's nickname is an easily confirmed fact. Second, your stated objection was lack of any boob-grabbing allegation, for which you demanded a cite. That's not particularly relevant since I wasn't saying he was accused, but rather that he had a particular nickname. Nevertheless, I pointed out the name of the boob accuser and the fact that it was stated in the self-same article. That should have given you pause before deleting again. At the least, you could have had the grace to acknowledge your error. Third, I specifically asked you to take it to talk if you still had a problem, and you refused. That's lame.

The article has (mostly uncited, by the way) the nicknames Austrian Oak, The Governator, Conan the Republican, Ahhnold, and Herr Gröpenführer. Der Boobengrabber is factual and of the same relevance. It's used about 73 times a day on talk radio.

The decent thing for you to do would be to restore the deletion and engage in some kind of discussion if you still have a problem.

1926 hurricane

[edit]

The damage figure in 1926 was $100 million and was published in the Monthly Weather Review. The inflation figure of $98 billion was reported on a NOAA site [5]. How is that speculative? These figures exist and should be reported. That revert you made bordered on vandalism in my opinion, because you removed valid information. The only reason it wasn't was because there were good intentions behind it.

E. Brown, Hurricane enthusiast - Squawk Box 20:54, 5 August 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Telling me to 'read up on it' doesn't tell me crap. I need to know where you got your information and why you arrived at this conclusion. If the figure of $98 billion is 'worthless', why was it published on a site from a no-nonsense organization like NOAA? That new figure you put on the site looks like one you just pulled out of a hat. The wealth normalization figure gives a great idea of what $100 million meant to people in 1926. Your rash, extremely opinionated reasoning makes no sense to me.

Hurricane Cleo

[edit]

You might want to be aware of this. I put the article Hurricane Cleo (1958) up for deletion because someone just copied and pasted a section of an article I wrote, (Catastrophic Florida Hurricanes: 1961-present), into another article. I've got people blindly just looking at the article's title and saying "Keep!". The section was on the 1964 storm named Cleo and it was put into an article that labeled it the 1958 storm. It was never intended to have its own article. Cyrius might want to get involved too. I need some rational thinkers (like you and Cyrius) in this.

ok, now but for my point of view we don't need to write about graphics on country-pages on the Naming page. maybe longer run we need other subpages like the "/Naming".

another thing: thx for fixing the break on vfd tango.info, I forgot that it is included in summary page somewhere.

Hi

[edit]

I reverted Elizabeth Bowes-Lyon to the form that starts with her birthname. It is standard historical naming technique to refer to consorts by pre-marital name. The reasons are complex. Consorts don't have numbers so they cannot be distinguished by their ordinals. In addition it is normal to use pre-marital name to clarify who they were personally rather than refer to them by a title they got later in life. Hence everyone uses Catherine of Aragon, not Queen Catherine, Alexandra of Denmark rather than Queen Alexandra or Queen Alexandra the Queen Mother. In addition monarchs (regnant rather than consort) are referred to by highest title here and elsewhere. Queen Mother is not the highest title Elizabeth held. Queen was, but if we write Queen Elizabeth people will confuse her with her daughter, the queen regnant, Queen Elizabeth II.

Starting the article with her actual name, which was Elizabeth Bowes-Lyon, rather than Queen Elizabeth or Queen Elizabeth the Queen Mother, is also easier, in terms of reading than starting with her last title and working backwards from it.

Look out, BTW for an individual who keeps doing the endless changing formats of consort pages. (He writes comments in capitals.) He has been repeated warned to stop changing consort articles to consort name rather than the standard maiden name, but will not stop. He has been warned numerous times that he faced a block if he kept doing it. I am loathe to block him but all efforts to explain to him the standard format to use have failed. He even spent ages deleting surnames from royal pages, insisting they were wrong even when aides to the Queen confirmed they were correct. He really is an annoying prat and something needs to be done about him. At this stage it is simple vandalism. FearÉIREANN\(caint) 22:40, 8 August 2005 (UTC)[reply]

No problem mate. The only problem that arises is how soon after the death of a consort should they be in as maiden name/title. Some publications apply a one year 'mourning' period after their death after which they revert to maiden name. Some hardcopy sources apply a two editions rule if the first editions comes out within a short time of her death. Others apply a 3-5 year wait. Usually the latter are hardcopy publications. A small minority apply a when succeeded to the title rule. As Wikipedia is constantly updated, it seems logical to have moved by now. (The BBC last week referred to her as EBL. Broadcasters usually follow two standards. In news coverage they stick for up to a decade (sometimes longer) with last used name, while in biographical programmes, etc they move to personal maiden name pretty much instantly. So on the news you'll hear "Diana, Princess of Wales" or even the non-existent Princess Diana, but on detailed programmes she now is often referred to as Lady Diana Spencer again, especially now that her husband's second wife is legally Princess of Wales even if she doesn't use the title!)
Ultimately using maiden name allows the question who was she? to be answered. She was Elizabeth Bowes-Lyon. What she was is different. She was the Queen Mother for 50 years of her life, having been also a queen, a duchess and a lady. Using maiden name/title follows the logical format who, what, where, when which is why in history is generally written that way. Historians, for example, will write of "Henry VIII and his wife, Catherine of Aragon", "George V and his wife Mary of Teck", "George VI and his wife Elizabeth Bowes-Lyon" because it gives information on who there wife was, rather than the less information "Henry VIII and his wife, Queen Catherine", "George V and his wife, Queen Mary" and "George VI and his wife, Queen Elizabeth" Henry VIII and his wife, Catherine of Aragon" tells us not just who he married but where she came from, and that she was a princess. "George VI and his wife Elizabeth Bowes-Lyon" tells us her name, her family and by the form used that she was a commoner. Diana really should be at Diana Spencer by now, but every time I try edit wars erupt. Sometimes the amateurishness on Wikipedia can be frustrating. Oh well! Thanks for the message. FearÉIREANN\(caint) 23:20, 8 August 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Hi Golbez, Hello (I love your nickname, played that game endlessly).

Main Page: Thieves steal 150 million reals ($65m) in the Banco Central Fortaleza robbery, Brazil's largest bank robbery and possibly the second largest ever.

The plural of Real is Reais; and it´s the Banco Central robbery at Fortaleza. I´m brazilian ;) Subramanian talk 21:44, 9 August 2005 (UTC)[reply]

It´s a pleasure to help, please count on me as a source for information on Brazil anytime you want.

 1. We usually say "Amazonas state" and "Amazonas river" or contextualize it when saying simply "Amazonas". The Amazon forest is Amazônia. So, your solution is fine by our standards. This is not a big deal.
 2. São Paulo is both the name of the state and its capital, as you know. We would write "São Paulo, SP" and "São Paulo state". The problem is, we know that the SP means the state and therefore acknowedge "São Paulo, SP" as the city, but would this be fine for the English Wikipedia? As for the Sao Paolo form, I´m sorry, but it is wrong either way. It doesn´t exist in any language. In Italian it is "San Paolo", in English "St. Paul", in Spanish "San Pablo" and in Portuguese São Paulo! Better change it. If you're felling like it, check its official page in awkward English.
 3. We would do make it "Rio de Janeiro, RJ" and "Rio de Janeiro state". Again, would this be fine for en.wikipedia?
 4. Brasília (mind the accent) is simply Brasília because we don´t have a state as in Washington State / Washington D.C. We have a district for Brasília, D.F., because we decided it shouldn´t be under any gubernatorial rule, but we don´t mention the D.F. unless when posting a letter.

The news is still a little awkward: it should be Banco Central robbery at Fortaleza, there is no Banco Central Fortaleza for a robbery to happen there.

This guy here was really powerful, you know. File:Golbez small.gif

styles

[edit]

Given the endless debate/rows etc over styles I've been thinking as to what is the best way to come up with a consensus solution. Styles have to be in an article, but using them upfront is, I think, a mistake and highly controversial. I've designed a series of templates which I think might solve the problem. There are specific templates for UK monarchs, Austrian monarchs, popes, presidents, Scottish monarchs and HRHs. (I've protected them all, temporarily, because I want people to discuss them in principle rather than battle over content and design right now.) I've used a purple banner because it is a suitable royal colour and is also distinctive. They are eyecatching enough to keep some of the pro-styles people happy; one of their fears seemed to be that styles would be buried. But by not being used they are neutral enough to be factual without appearing to be promotional. I'd very much like your views. I'm going to put them on a couple of user pages and ask for a reaction. There needs to be a calm debate on them this time. FearÉIREANN\(caint) 02:41, 10 August 2005 (UTC)[reply]

I thought it would be easier to access Punjab if a comma separates them. Hello again, I've been trying to improve the rather skimpy Guainas pages lately, and I was wondering if you'd be willing to possibly make some regional maps. Don't do it if your busy with other things of course, but if you ever have some spare time it'd be much appreciated.

Regional maps are needed for Suriname and Guyana. French Guiana also needs region maps, though it gets a bit complicated here - it's divided into 2 arrondissements (seen on the CIA map), then 20 communes (I can only find one map of these at http://perso.wanadoo.fr/redris/cartes/commune1.jpg )

But anyway, if you have time then GY and SR need maps. Thnaks for your help Sdrawkcab 14:52, 12 August 2005 (UTC)sdrawkcab[reply]

Notable Enough

I'm really not sure how the August 9 Shooting Kingston, Tennessee article isn't notable enough to be on the main page. I thought it was extremly notable (see Fox's Site, CNN's Site, and MSNBC's Site. That story has been extremly popular. Also, entire programs have been devoted to this story. I know this not might be a story from a world view, but there has been stories that didn't have that much of a world view on the main page. I don't mean to cause a problem, because I know your edits and decisions are for the greater good, (plus you're an administator, can't argue with that) but I am asking you to rethink your stance on this. :) --Newguineafan 20:24, August 11, 2005 (UTC)

George H. W. Bush

[edit]

You've twice reverted my statement that Bush is the first Republican president to appoint an African American judge to the SCOTUS. This is an important FACT about Bush that illustrates the success of the civil rights movement throughout all walks of life. You called it inane, and I would like to know your justication for calling this fact inane. You say that the edit is "just to make a point," but it is not. It is merely for balance's sake. George W. Bush's page contains a reference to him being the first Republican president to appoint an openly Gay man to his administration. I fail to see how Bush's appointment of Clarence Thomas is any less significant.

You've obviously letting your personal feelings on this matter influence your judgement on what is and isn't appropriate. It shouldn't matter who or why placed information in an article as long as it's good information. What you need to do is step back, look at the information objectively, and ask yourself simply, "is this appropriate for an encyclopedia article? is this a fact, and is it a significant one?" If you do not believe my edit meets this criteria, please explain why. Sdauson 20:26, 12 August 2005 (UTC)[reply]

As a sweeping generalization, the African American population seems to take issue with the Republican Party, as black voters usually overwhelmingly vote Democrat. Republicans are currently opposed to things like Affimative Action. Civil rights have been a sore spot for the party, and not just because of the GLBTQ minority. George H.W. Bush got just two opportunities to appoint a SCOTUS justice, and he chose to use one of those nominations to nominate a black man. This is VERY significant, and is at the very least comparable to Bush expending one of his hundreds, even thousands of presidential appointments on a gay man. You say you do not support the sentence in George W. Bush's article, yet you do not vote against it in the survey (which does not conform to Wikipedia:Survey Guidelines, btw), and then try to use that poll as an accurate judge of support for one side of a disagreement or another. If your main gripe is then that I've failed to achieve consensus on the inappropriateness of the George W. Bush factoid, you need to consider that there seems to be very little effort to actually gather the genuine opinon required for consensus, or lack thereof.
In the end, it's not about who's right and who's wrong, what's appropriate and what's not. It's about seeking out double standards and eliminating them. If the majority of people do believe that a factoid is appropriate on one page, it should be appropriate on all other pages in which similar factoids are relevant. Anything less is a breach of consistancy and encyclopedic integrity. Sdauson 21:12, 12 August 2005 (UTC)[reply]
You seem to be under the impression that I believe the sentence in the George W. Bush article degrades the article itself. This is not true. I merely believe the sentence to be largely irrelevant to the article itself. Yes, I believe that including irrelevant information lowers the quality of an article, but I also believe that lack of consistancy lowers the quality of an encyclopedia. The difference here is that irrelevance is subjective, while consistancy is not nearly so. I appreciate and respect the fact that my subjective opinon on relevance is currently in the minority, and as such, the quality of the article is not objectively diminished. However, we ALL still have a responsibility to the encyclopedia of maintaining consistancy.
Furthermore, I believe that the George H.W. Bush remark I attempted to add to his article IS actually relevant, IS more significant than the George W. Bush remark, and DOES cross the threshold betweenwhat is appropriate for an encylopedia, REGARDLESS of what is in George W. Bush's article. Re-read the talk page on this subject if you need to, but you'll find that my first and primary argument against the statement in the George W. Bush article is that the appointment is utterly insignificant because it represents one choice out of thousands. This certainly doesn't apply to an analysis of George H.W. Bush's SCOTUS appointments, and as such, my claim of irrelevance on the gay appointment bears no weight in matters of SCOTUS appointments. Were Roberts (George W. Bush's supreme court nomination) to be an openly gay man, THAT would definitely be worthy of mention in his article. Sdauson 21:33, 12 August 2005 (UTC)[reply]
If it's "just your opinion" that Clarence Thomas is "not so much" worth noting, then I suggest you not edit pages based solely on your opinons. If you have your opinon and I have mine, then we need to take this to the next level of dispute resolution. Sdauson 21:42, 12 August 2005 (UTC)[reply]
Based on our discussion, I'm going to go out on a limb and guess that you're a straight white male with really no idea of the dynamic involved in being a homosexual man today, or a black man 15 years ago. If you do understand this, please correct me, but otherwise, maybe you should think and hard before editing articles based on how "much it means" (to you) to be black, gay, or female. You've said that you're editing this article based solely on your opinion of how important you think the information is, and I disagree with you. You have yet to provide any indication as to why including this fact lowers the quality of the article-- just saying it doesn't make it so. I think in an encyclopedia you should have a good reason for intentionally omitting information. Sdauson 14:55, 13 August 2005 (UTC)[reply]
There was obviously a difference in public perceptions of race issues between when Marshall was appointed and when Thomas was appointed. But the point is that when it comes to equality for African Americans, there was still work left to do fifteen years ago. There is still work left to do to this day. I certainly hope you don't disagree and try to say that black and white stand on equal footing in today's America, because that would just be ignorant. Marshall's appointment was certainly the more progressive step, but that doesn't negate the significance of Thomas' appointment, as Thomas' appointment shows a bi-partisan acceptance of black justices on the SCOTUS. George W. Bush's appointment of a gay man to his administration does little more than show bi-partisan acceptance of gay politicians, because like with the Marshall/Thomas comparison, the real progressive step, the real civil rights breakthrough in and of itself occured befoew George W. Bush's presidency. You keep repeating your misguided notion that I'm merely trying to make a point, but listen: I am not. I will argue for the inclusion of the George H. W. Bush inclusion even if the George W. Bush statement is removed. You still have failed to provide a valid reason why this FACTUAL information should not be included in George H. W. Bush's article. Instead of trying to hide behind forcing someone else to take initiative to validate factual information, please take this to the next level of dispute resolution like I asked, and bring it up on the talk page. Was also curious as to how you'd think it best to do the updates on the Pacific Hurricanes. As they tend to not be a threat to land, the updates at 5am/pm and 11am/pm (EST) don't give a position relative to land. As such one would have to wait for the tropical weather outlook page for this info which comes out 3 hrs i think, after the advisorys from the NHC. I gather giving the up-to-date longitude/latitude points would be ineffective in giving the reader a point of reference... but is the only means of giving info as it happens.. Boort 21:35, 12 August 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Hey there... had a question to pose your way. Seeing as how you're well established in this area of study, would like your input if possible. Wondering if putting a section of ENSO-Hurricane interaction in the tropical cyclone page would be worthwhile. I'm sure there's a wealth of research on that topic, but don't want to end up cluttering up the article. Boort 06:49, 14 August 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Punjab

[edit]

I moved the article back because I agreed with Nichalp's initial move, nor was there was no reasoning given for your move on the article's talk page, nor a request to discuss the move before it was made. If you have a look at "What links here", Punjab, India is what most of the articles link to. I have worked on a number of India geography articles, and have found that there is a general practice that, if it is necessary to distinguish between places with the same name, that the name of the article include the name of the place and the distinguishing geographic unit (usually, but not always, a state), separated by a comma. This convention is common outside the India-related geography articles as well. I think it is a pretty simple, useful, and elegant convention, and your change didn't fit with it. International Phonetic Alphabet

[edit]

Quick admin-related question for you. Are you aware of any Wikipolicy that states we must use the International Phonetic Alphabet? I just reverted a change to the article Caroline Dhavernas in which a user -- another admin, as it happened -- stated that we use IPA for denoting pronounciation of names and added a bunch of text that my browser couldn't read, so I reverted. I'm unaware of any such policy. Are you? Cheers! 23skidoo 13:29, 13 August 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Fair enough but the thing doesn't show up on my browser and all it does is mess up the text formatting. Is this a Netscape vs. Internet Explorer situation? I personally feel phonetic alphabets don't work because it requires you to virtually learn another language to make sense of them. 23skidoo 20:19, 13 August 2005 (UTC)[reply]

There doesn't seem to be much happening on this project. I found the opening and closing dates for all sessions (through first session, 108th) and, following the format I found for the first (single-digit) congresses, have been going through them in sequence. I figured this was a nice, low-risk way to get started. However, I'm now up to the 34th Congress, and I see the format/template has changed (or hasn't been applied). I have not added any bias on the articles I have modified. If anything, I removed the sugar-coated, neutral bias. I'm sorry if the truth offends you. The truth of Islamic fundamentalism being used to justify violence offends me too. Perhaps, instead of completly censoring my additions, you could either stay out of the article completly, or work with the current version to meet whatever standards you think acceptable. If someone disagrees with you, I'm sure you won't mind if they make a change here or there. That is how Wikipedia was created. If that's too much to ask, then remove the edit links, and critically review each and every article before you post it.

Sensored facts

By the way, I probably should have made reference links in the article entitled "Al-Qaeda" when I added the $25 million dollar reward offered for bin Laden. It might not belong in a traditional encyclopedia, but then again, neither does a current event.

[edit]

Why is the word 'terrorist' biased? A person who kills people at random is attempting to instill terror in a population. Therefore, that person is a terrorist. Can you honestly say that isn't what's happening? I'm not even stating my opinion, only calling the 'insurgents' for what they truly are. Even the original article states this at least a couple times, just using a few more words.

What kind of 'positive and sympathetic tone' can someone use for both sides of an insurgency?

Lack of neutrality as an excuse to delete

[edit]

From your NPOV:

The neutrality policy is used sometimes as an excuse to delete texts that are perceived as biased. Isn't this a problem?

In many cases, yes. Many of us believe that the fact that some text is biased is not enough, in itself, to delete it outright. If it contains valid information, the text should simply be edited accordingly.

There's sometimes trouble determining whether some claim is true or useful, particularly when there are few people on board who know about the topic. In such a case, it's a good idea to raise objections on a talk page; if one has some reason to believe that the author of the biased material will not be induced to change it, we have sometimes taken to removing the text to the talk page itself (but not deleting it entirely). But the latter should be done more or less as a last resort, never as a way of punishing people who have written something biased.

If you want to see a page that reeks of bias, check out Cindy Sheehan.

Where's the POV, and who the hell are you?

[edit]

Frankly, you STILL haven't said how the word 'terrorist' conveys my point of view, which is something you don't know. You can also stop playing Wikipedia God and quit removing anything I post. As far as arguing on your talk page, it's the only place I can contact you. If there's another place or another person you'd rather I complain to, feel free to let me know.

Good point

[edit]

OK, maybe I forgot those things. But even you can't say that they are killing in the name of their religion. You still haven't said what the difference is between an insurgent and a terrorist.

OK

Congress of the United States 2

[edit]

Hi. Sorry it took me so long to reply to you. Also, this is probably a lot longer than you wanted, but the whole issue got very complicated. Anyway, here's the steps in the dual officeholding debacle from the beginning:

 1. Barberio posted his question about holding offices in both the Senate and House on the Congress of the United States talk page.
 2. Someone replied to his question, saying they couldn't find any restrictions listed in the Constitution or House and Senate Rules, either.
 3. Barberio made his first edit about, inserting a paragraph claiming that "their is no legal restriction" preventing someone from serving in the House and Senate simultaneously, and that "circumstance and tradition" is the reason that a member always resigns one seat.
 4. Another user commented out his edits as original research.
 5. Barberio posted a note on the talk page, saying it was "silly" to remove his edit for lack of citations. He said that the lack of explicit rules was a source in itself.
 6. I explained that it was his conclusions that were the problem: Just because there isn't an explicit restriction against that type of dual officeholding that doesn't mean the courts would find some implicit or inherent restriction (and it follows that the lack of House-Senate dual isn't necessarily because of tradition). I explained that his conclusions were OR that needed supporting cites; and argued that without those conclusions, his observation was only trivia.
 7. Barberio replied that he was in a "quandary" because he doesn’t have the cites, but he thought it was necessary to include the info in the article, because important because "most other bicameral institutions do have an explicit bar".
 8. I replied "Here's a suggestion: research the topic".
 9. He apparently e-mailed the Senate Historical Office, then posted the SHO's reply on the talk page. Strangely, that reply is not about holding offices in both the House and Senate, but about holding both federal and state offices. Maybe his e-mail to the SHO was confusing.
 10. He then put his new version into the article. That paragraph was rather confused (a large part of it was taken almost verbatim from the SHO's e-mail). Barberio mixed his original point about Senate-House dual holding with comments about federal-state legislative dual holding. He also said that "most other bicameral institutions" had explicit bans on such practices.
 11. That's when you did some revisions to his work. I made some further edits. I separated the statements about federal-state and House-Senate dual holding and reorganized the paragraph. I removed his unsourced claim that most other bicameral institutions had explicit bans.
 12. He reverted the edits back to your revision, saying that I had removed "information provided by the the Senate History Office" [his emphasis], and that I needed to add cites to support my deletions. He didn't specify which points he was talking those were. I thought, since I mentioned those points in my edit summary, that he was talking removing his claims about "most other bicameral institutions" and toned down his claims about dual House-Senate holding.
 13. Ddye then made some edits that restored a lot of my edits.
 14. I posted a response to Barberio on the talk page. I explained why I deleted the other bicameral institutions claim. I explained the distinction between House-Senate and federal-state dual officeholding. I then deleted a claim Ddye had added about tradition, and Ddye reworded his claim to mention that dual House-Senate holding has never happened.
 15. Barberio replied to my reply. It turns out he was upset that I had removed a passage he had included about some occurrences of federal-state dual officeholding happening in the 18th Century. His sentence was taken nearly verbatim from the SHO's e-mail. He then put the sentence back in.
 16. I made some revisions to his paragraph. I rewrote and shortened his sentence about the 18th century instances and moved it farther up in the paragraph. I also made some other grammar and clarity fixes. In my edit summary, I said "copyedited for length and clarity".
 17. He changed my edits, reinserting his original sentence in its original position (which made the sentence redundant) and putting in a paragraph break. In his e.s., he said "Please do not make content edits and claim they are clarity edits."
 18. I deleted his re-added sentence, pointing out in my edit summary that I had simply rewritten his sentence and moved it to a new location. I also put a note on the talk page explaining this.
 19. He then posted a snide reply on the talk page, saying "That it came out as redundancy is my fault after trying to tidy up the 'clarity edit'.". He said that the point about the 18th-cent. occurrences was important because it showed "that what is now commonly accepted practice was not always so". He said that his sentence was almost a direct quote from the SHO e-mail, and for that reason, it was the better wording. He argued that the sentence clarified that the occurrences of dual holding "applied to State legislatures, not State Offices" (actually, the SHO email is quite confusing on that point).
 20. I got very annoyed that he continued to put "clarity edit" in quotes. I replied to his post, complaining about that point. I also pointed out that the SHO's e-mail was ambiguous. I then pointed out that including the exact words of the SHO e-mail w/o explaining where they came from was "arguably plagiarism". I said out that there was nothing magical about the SHO's words that required that they be used verbatim.
 21. He then posted another reply, saying that I had made the discussion uncivil by accusing him of plagiarism.
 22. I responded by apologizing for my plagiarism remark. I pointed out that he continued to insinuate that I had concealed the nature of my clarity edits and asked him for an apology on that. That's when I asked you for some help. Barberio never did reply to this last post.

Ultimately, I think Barberio thought that he had made a great new discovery and he wanted to put it on Wikipedia, no matter what. I think he has difficulty understanding the nature of the federal system (see his edit and the responses on Liste of U.S. Supreme Court cases), and that made his edits even more confused. Anyway, thanks again.

Human Rights Servey on Wikipedia (The final post of I_sterbinski)

[edit]
Dear all,
Wikipedia was recently a subject of intensive research of an huge international human right organization. A team of people from different nationalities and ages were acting on Wikipedia for 20 days, investigating previously noted anomalities of Wikipedia free editing and forming a final report, which (between the others similar reports) will later be a guide to all future moves of the organization concerning Wikipedia. Acting under an account of a real person, their privacy is to be held private. Therefore, very few private information will be revealed.
Also, this is a result of the lack of final possition of the organization concerning Wikipedia and human rights, which was still not formed.
The team's final post on Wikipedia, where they explain their actions can be found on the following addresses:

The team would like to thank to all the persons who took part in the correspondence with us.
We also want to appologise for keeping our identity secret for a longer period.

I didn't realize VP had article under his "everyday" name. that's cool. my bad on that one.

I think you may have addressed this somewhere, but- about the felons- why should they not be mentioned where I put it in?

By the by I'v now overtly categorized my three user names to indicate I'm the only user. that reminds me- I'v never denied having multiple user names or voted for anything posing as multiple users. Perhaps more transparency is needed. I'm usually not compelled to use more than one user per article, but when other people get picky and pushy it brings out different sides of me.

What POV do you think I'm pushing? Surely your POV/area of concern could be discerned by looking at your contribs. let's work something out. Crackatzzl 04:47, 28 August 2005 (UTC)[reply]

I think

"Americans (except some convicted felons) enjoy universal suffrage upon reaching the age of 18,"

is more truthful and more importantly more honest than

"Americans enjoy universal suffrage upon reaching the age of 18,"

perhaps we could take out "convicted". I'm not married to it.

I think it's worth including.

Long Discussions

[edit]

The talk pages for the 2005 Atlantic hurricane season and Hurricane Katrina are getting about as big as the hurricanes they discribe. I've been trying to stem the tide, but you can only archive so much, I've even been severely chastised by one user (coughBoortcough) for doing it. Both the 2005 and Katrina talk pages are over 100 kilobytes long and I don't think there's much more I can do.

I don't agree. If the majority of people in New York did'nt, for whatever reason, call the United States by its official title, I think that would be noteworthy enough for inclusion in an article on the city.

Its 0waldo with a zero not Owaldo. My understasnding is Jesse partly removed his link because he stuck it at the top of the list (see the edit summary), and when he revert stuck it at the top again I also removed it, then all the stuff about being a major donor, and him putting his user name into the article, happened. I early on tried the link and found it useless. It identified my IP and that was it, though it also thought I was in the US (about 1,000 miles to the north), which a Brazilian user also reported. If he had stuck his link at the bottom it may have stayed, but he did put it into 3 or 4 other sites as 24.214.30.98, and they were all quickly removed by difeerent editors, so maybe it wouldn't have, SqueakBox 18:04, August 31, 2005 (UTC)

Yeah I got a similar letter. Good to know. I told him to write to you, or just let things be and hopefully they will calm down in 48 hours, which I think would be the best option, SqueakBox 18:10, August 31, 2005 (UTC)

I am not sure what his problem is, but he takes offense whenever you revert his edits. He calls me out claiming I am being overly technical by reverting his am/pm -> a.m./p.m. edits when that is exactly what he did to your edits. Seems a bit hypocritical to me. He puts a message on my talk page, and I will quote a portion of it, "Quite honestly, get a life, if all you want to do is revert my edits, and barrage me with technicalities, i truly pity you." I post a reply to him and he just simply deletes. What in God's name was that all about? All I said was that I removed the link you put into the article and I gave the reasons why, politly by the way. And then I get my head chewed off. If you were thinking that I removed the link from the discussion page (which I found hard to believe, seeing as the link is still there), think again. I did no such thing. AySz88 had this to say:

Sounds to me like there's been a miscommunication; I think Golbez thought you edited the link out of his comment (or removed the brackets, or something; the URL still isn't hyperlinked, anyway, probably because it's missing the http:// ). AySz88^-^ 05:12, September 12, 2005 (UTC)

More Boort

[edit]

Holderca and I agree that we've had enough of this guy. Here's an ongoing discussion that's been going on on Holderca's talk page:

Sorry if I'm intruding on a private discussion, but I was posting a message for Golbez, and noticed you had posted a complaint about this user. This prick jerk has attacked me too. Look at the random insult he left me on my talk page:

*"Seeing how you're 15, and are obviously picking fights with whomever you choose, as can be shown by your deletion of entire sections of dicussions on pages, i'm not going to waste my time with you. I'm actually trying to promote the eduactional value of these articles with my contributions. It's unfortunate that you take offense to suggestions on this site and reply with vindictive remarks. Boort 06:06, 14 August 2005 (UTC)"[reply]

First of all, I was 16 at the time of his post (learn how to add, moron). All I did was archive some older sections of the Talk page on 2005 Atlantic hurricane season. The "picking fights" were probably petty arguments with Golbez that he had no right to spy on. Those "vindicative remarks" were me trying to tell him that all I was doing was archiving. I posted two messages on his talk page and he removed them without a word. At that point I was so infuriated that if he had been in my presence, I could have beat him to death with a lead pipe and not cared. I've cooled off a bit now, but the jerk still makes me fume. I'm thinking about posting a personal attacks warning on his talk page (which he will probably delete) and if he reacts violently and unreasonably after that, then we will block him. He's pissed enough people off.

PS: I removed what I view as a personal attack by him from your talk page. Revert it if you want.

E. Brown, Hurricane enthusiast - Squawk Box 23:40, 12 September 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Finally, someone I can relate to about this idiot. He is about as hypocritical as they come. My favorite being how he keeps accusing me of insulting him (which he never gives me an answer when I ask him about it) and then later in the same post he tells me that I need to "get a life." That sounds like an insult to me. Funny thing is, I think you are much more mature than him and you are seven years younger. --Holderca1 12:50, 13 September 2005 (UTC)[reply]
"I'm thinking about posting a personal attacks warning on his talk page (which he will probably delete) and if he reacts violently and unreasonably after that, then we will block him. He's pissed enough people off." What do you say?

I am all for it. Telling someone to "get a life" is definitely a personal attack. --Holderca1 14:14, 13 September 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Here are some of his posts on Holderca's talk page:
is the NHC the bible on everything that gets written in these articles.. i'm really curious... 10mph is 16.09 km/h... hence 16... Not to take a jab at you.. it just gets really annoying how everything in every single hurricane article is done so because the NHC says so. Boort 03:17, 1 September 2005 (UTC)[reply]
thank you for the smug responses. I have no idea how the NHC works or what they do, or who uses their info (that's sarcasm by the way). I was merely trying to state a simple point as to how everything on these pages is a simple regurgitation of what the NHC dishes out, and is not the intent of the encyclopaedic nature of wiki. Here, you engaged in getting into symantics over the pupose of the NHC and what have you. Boort 03:56, 1 September 2005 (UTC)[reply]
and here come the insults, how mature. I really hope that satisfies you. Not going to waste my time on someone such as yourself, i'll spare you an adjective. How truly sad. Boort 04:20, 1 September 2005 (UTC)[reply]

I have now taken the only stand against this that has been done so far (other than asking him to stop): I have posted a personal attacks warning on his talk page. If he so much as deletes the message from his talk page like he has other simple questions and requests, and especially if he makes more attacks, I will request a block. I hope you agree with what I've said.

George H. W. Bush

[edit]

Hi, you ignored my last message on this subject, so I'll repeat it for you below:

Lists of Congressional Delagations

[edit]

Golbez- I'm not sure whether to put this on my discussion or yours- but here it is.

A little investigation on my part has revealed to me that you have much invested in these Congressional Delegation pages. I want you to know I respect that and want to work cooperatively with you on enhancing them. I am writing a bunch of bio articles about Delaware politicians, and enjoy it so much I may never stop. As I said in my pervious note I am very concerned about helping readers easily locate obsure historical figures in recognizable time frames. They can't possibly understand the context of a bio without understanding the context of the times. So I am thinking about putting Presidents on US polititians articles as well as other information. See the bottom of Cornelius P. Comegys for an example of another approach. I just haven't figured out a way I like.

My grand plan (I think) is to have "see also" links from articles to four lists, 1) A chronological list of the relevant Senators, Reps, etc, 2) an alphabetical list, 3) a timeline, 4) and an election results compilation for the office. The chronological list (see Governors of Delaware is pretty close to what has been out there already; I'm hoping the relevant category can suffice for the alpha list; I'll have to build the election result list as a combination what's now on individual articles. As for the time line, your Congressional Delegation format works real well, especially if I can solve the "lost in time" problem with it. If it seems to me like the best solution, but you just can't stand it that way, I will happily take the stuff you don't like off and build my own table, and call it a timeline.

A couple of other things. I'm following the color scheme for parties that seems to have been established, but am brightening them up a bit. Is that OK with you? I'm also wondering if the Senators and Reps shouldn't be on two separate articles? Even little Delaware is getting too big. And I haven't even dealt with House of Repr issues in a big state.

I look forward to working cooperatively with you on all this. Please help me understand your objectives and priorities and I will be flexible and work my efforts around them.

stilltim 19:06, 22 September 2005 (UTC)[reply]

I don't much like the Comegys approach either for that very reason. I'll try "world leaders of the year," didn't know about it. I'm not sure the years themselves on the Senate terms are critcal, they could be dropped and just a blank box left, and nothing lost. I've thought about color in there, but didn't know what color would be right.

I absolutely agree that this page should not be a general timeline of Delaware federal political history, but it is in fact a timeline of the congressional delegation. So, my logic goes, since its already a timeline why not solve the whole timeline problem for the congressional delegation with it. It has been my thought to create a similar article (timeline) for Governors, perhaps including other important state wide offices. I'm sure our goals are basically consistent, I just don't want to step all over your work.

It is a very new and fascinating experience working in this environment where no one is in charge and all reasonable people have to find a way to agree. Its kind of like a multi dimensional marriage.

[edit]

And a lot of other things. I'm in kind of a state of shock right now. NSLE out of the blue posed a message on my talk page saying that he was considering nominating me for adminship! I nearly had an anurism. I have contributed a lot of useful information (40 of the hurricane season articles, two large pages and many others from my 1,800 edits since becoming a user in January). He also said I help people out a lot. But I know just the bare basics of Wikipedia policy. I went to the Wikipedia page on adminship and I felt like I was on a another planet. First of all, what the hell is a sysop? Sure I contribute a lot, sure I help people, but being an administrator is a hell of a lot more than that. Since this was never originally a goal for me, I have no concept of what it is to be an administrator. I got involved with Wikipedia as a medium for my hurricane obsession. Never in my wildest dreams did I think that someone would feel I deserved the honor. I made my first anon edit less than a year ago. I don't know what to think now.

WMATA Infoboxes

[edit]

First off, re: map links, I included those because the infobox I based it on (the infobox for the New York City subway) had them, and I thought why not. Plus since Metro lists street addresses for all the stations, it's fairly easy to get the latitude/longitude coordinates.

As for width, this was something I didn't give much thought to, since that was carried directly over from the NYC infobox. I'm open to playing with the width, but I also don't want the infobox to become a lot longer to compensate for losing the width, since I did play with the placement of the middle line a bit to keep things on a single line. This may also be a bit of a personal bias here, but I'd rather see a shorter and wider box that the article curls around under (or at least goes down past), than a long and narrow box that sticks out beyond the bottom of the article.

Next/Preceding was also something that New York did, and I was on the fence about including it in the WMATA infobox. I ended up including it, with the assumption that we can always remove it later. I'm thinking that removing it is probably a good idea at this point, since that would shorten the Infobox considerably, which will be especially helpful for stations like Metro Center, Gallery Place, L'Enfant Plaza, and Fort Totten, where four total stations would be listed (two preceding, two next).

Interested in knowing what you think about this. SchuminWeb (Talk) 10:55, 19 October 2005 (UTC)[reply]

He way not like al-qeada's motives and you may not like them but this is what they are and people have a right to know the facts. Yes there are DMZ that separate very different cultures. Look at the Golan Heights with ISrael, Syria and Lebanon. The edits I made explained that the division was supposed to be temporary and that there was supposed to be a nation wide vote for unification. 8. why do you want me quickly suspended for several monthes?
 9. where did I accuse William of using sockpuppets? maybe I did but I can't remember. I can imagine I might have somewhere raised the question wether he is one. but that's it.

I made all this comments because you signed what William wrote. Tobias Conradi (Talk) 15:28, 14 December 2005 (UTC)[reply]

OK, it has been posted 48 hours, and has two folks listed, now what happens? Nobody has moved it down to confirmed, do I do that? William Allen Simpson 04:36, 16 December 2005 (UTC)[reply]

I don't really know; I think there are admins who monitor RfC and will do the moving themselves. It doesn't matter if it doesn't happen immediately. --Golbez 05:29, 16 December 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Ah, but there we disagree! I'd have asked for permanent banishment, but the general thing here seems to be for some limited period of time. I never imagined that a single user could do so much damage so quickly without prompt action, and would continue after warning! In the mundane world, there'd be a torte action and permanent injunction. William Allen Simpson 12:45, 16 December 2005 (UTC)[reply]

I think you're blowing this way, way out of proportion. Tobias has been here for a very long time, much longer than you have. Anything he's done can be easily corrected, and is simply a difference of opinion (though better respect for the opinions of others would be nice). Also, an RfC simply can't result in any banishment, permanent or temporary. An RfAr is required for that, and we can't just leap to that. --Golbez 17:07, 16 December 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Just saw your recent changes to your confirmation (and moved the above here from my talk page, it helps continuity to have it all in one place). I added a link to the deletions list, but 250 was just a rough count, 50 per page. It's actually a bit higher.

 • This kind of extreme behaviour and lack of comity is the very thing that gives Wikipedia a bad name among professionals, along with the unreliable content among educators. It should result in the strictest sanctions, especially as s/he has been around a "very long time".
 • As for "easily corrected", my guess is working full time all by myself, it would take 4 months or more to fix just the massive edits and moves over the past few weeks, and I'm not sure how deep the rot extends. It should go without saying that I cannot work full time for 4 months.
 • Thanks for the information about escalation and arbitration. I'd patterned the RfC on the content of the others available, and assumed that the sanctions others requested were within scope. But in the meantime, let's hope some useful action is taken. For me, it will be an indication of the viability of the procedures.
William Allen Simpson 22:50, 16 December 2005 (UTC)[reply]
because you made nonsense statements like referring to my deleted pages, I am very interested too how the procedure works out. And at the end your behaviour of deleting is more vandal like than mine of adding. Tobias Conradi (Talk) 16:13, 17 December 2005 (UTC)[reply]

You would be very amazed at how quickly someone can move pages just by using Firefox tabs. I've done it myself. Don't accuse HIM of using a bot. I am starting to question my endorsement of your RfC, but since this is merely a request for COMMENT, I will stick to it, hoping to get some comments. --Golbez 23:53, 18 December 2005 (UTC)[reply]

 • OK, I'm amazed! My edits take tens of minutes each, as I try to check each "what links here". I'd never have imagined there was some way of handling this via FireFox tabs to do a hundred or more per hour. (I was an early Mozilla contributor, been using it daily for years, and thought I was fairly familiar with the product.) Please enlighten me?
 • As to failing to handle disambiguation and redirects, I've only included one example, but I'm pretty sure I've found a dozen. Just look at his history (Special:Contributions&target=Tobias_Conradi&offset=0&limit=500), especially at the time in question. No editting to be seen, just move after move after move!
 • Actually, I'm pretty disappointed in the lack of comments thus far. No wonder vandalism is so prevalent, it's hard to stop on a piecemeal basis.
 • Ah well, thanks for your assistance!
--William Allen Simpson 02:47, 19 December 2005 (UTC)[reply]
William you talk nonsense. Your accusations was that I use a bot because my edits are so fast. Golbez pointed out this can be done with FF. Golbez did not say I use FF tabs to do the editing itself. You yourself claimed there is no evidence that I check redirects. So if you assumed that I do not check and you are a FF contributor who knows the tab features very well and the Golbez comment needs to be amended to enlighten you ... mmmh why than did you claim I use a bot? In short: bot claim, don't check for redirect claim, and the new FF-known-but-how-can-FF-check-claim do not go together very well Tobias Conradi (Talk) 03:03, 19 December 2005 (UTC)[reply]

An example: I might load up 20 pages. I might check all of their "What links here" and middle-click each one that needs editing. I might now have 150 pages open. I edit each one, then I might save all in quick succession, ctrl-tab alt-s ctrl-tab alt-s, etc. Thus, 150 edits can be made inside a minute, while they actually took about 15 minutes to actually do. --Golbez 02:56, 19 December 2005 (UTC)[reply]

 • Well, there you go, it may be possible. I'd never have loaded up 150 pages in the first place. On my iMacG5, it sucks up so much memory over time (per page is never released) that I usually quit FireFox from time to time just to bring back page display speed.
 • Being a more conservative programmer with too much experience of lost work, I'd want to save my work a lot more often than once every 150 pages.
 • Any substantive comments on the UP text?

need your help

[edit]

Golbez, maybe you can at least convince William not to destroy the comparison table. Someland and somelandian cannot usefull be replaced by Country. The distinction between adjective and noun gets lost. I don't know why he is so bad faith assuming. I think his proposal has really some good points because it uses brackets or parenthesis as he words it. I don't think my work destroys very much, because it is only work on standardization it can be easily undone by a robot one day if a good solution is found. I think there are really worse things happening on WP. Beside the someland/somelandian thing, he is deleting proposal D from the table, I think this is more vandalise like than if I point out that in Honduras english word order is not official. Because I ADD something on a project page clarifying a wrong claim and he DELETES. Tobias Conradi (Talk) 16:04, 17 December 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Thank you

[edit]

thank you for your FF comment. That's exactly what I do, I use the tabs in FF. Maybe you can also tell him that the deleted pages are mostly categories and templates that I voted for deletion. I think the name changes that I did there are without any dispute at all. There was one for Ecuador or so, but this was reversed to the original. I removed brackets in the cat name there, because never saw this in other subnational entity cats. So the 271 delete pages is IMO of no say. Furthermore I allways check for double redirects, I even had a little fight with SqueakBox because he left behind double redirects. The there is no evidence that he fixed redirects-claim is of course wrong. Maybe he found no evidence, but then he did not search. It could also be stated there is NO evidence that he did NOT fix redirects would be much closer to truth. But there is now evidence of Assume-bad-faith by William. I think something YOU never did. (Or maybe I forgot it) But I think our dispute was more in another area. He could also write there is no evidence Tobias did not kill Kennedy. You understand what I mean? I mean, better he would go and provide evidence that I did NOT fix double-redirects. I don't understand: There is something signed by William and you. But than William goes editing the text. How is this handled in WP? For the reader that is not using history, it is as if you signed the new edits too. Tobias Conradi (Talk) 00:54, 19 December 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Again I have to say thank you. Thank you for your small but hopefully very helpfull "intervention". Tobias Conradi (Talk) 02:16, 22 December 2005 (UTC)[reply]

35 000? so you have slightly more edits than me? ... I think I have to go to move some subnational entity pages around ;-). I try not only to respect the policies but also to respect other editors. Maybe we can do something more than only talk about article naming. I think infoboxes would be a nice task. Is there a Golbot that could do some stuff on it? Rambot did a lot for US geographic articles. But who will help Africa and Latin America? I wonder whether a generalized Infobox_Territory would be feasible, I can imagine this could become qute complicated. Tobias Conradi (Talk) 06:42, 22 December 2005 (UTC)[reply]

reverts with minor flag

[edit]

Just saw your revert saying "... reverts are *never* to be marked minor. that is all."

 • If I made a mistake, I'm sorry. I certainly checked earlier, and just checked again. Cannot find that policy.
 • Also, I noticed earlier (and am looking at it now) that in the reverts of page blanking over at Hanukka, Eliezer, Dan100, Hintori and Adashiel all use minor. I assumed Conradi was just blowing smoke.

Whopping

[edit]

Personally, I think that my word choice gave the article a bit more zest and personality. However, since you have a problem with it, I will refrain from adding it again.

On 9/22/2005, you blocked User:206.226.255.59 for relentlessly adding commercial links. Guess what? The 90 days are up, and he's back. Hit him again, please? TIA, -- Mwanner | Talk 16:00, 22 December 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Ghana Map

[edit]

My goal was just to make "Greater Accra" readable. I have changed the authorship information on the Image:Ghana_regions.png page to show that my map is adapted from yours (This was used by someone who modified one of my maps). Is this acceptable? Acntx 11:46, 24 December 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Vandal again

someone with the address 152.3.232.17 is at it again (I noticed that you blocked that one in September). (see MoveOn.org) Thought I'd let ya know.--Hraefen 23:19, 24 December 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Sorry For The Delay, The MedCab Is Here

I'm going to be checking all the edits at Wikipedia:Request for comment/Naming conventions (subnational entities) over the next few days. I'll let you know what I think hopefully by the end of next week. karmafist 03:34, 25 December 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Hey, just letting you know that i've finalized my analysis at Wikipedia:Request for comment/Naming conventions (subnational entities). karmafist 19:06, 28 December 2005 (UTC)[reply]

 • Being "pretty sure" does not give you the right to delete software screenshots that have been indicated as such in the upload process. Please do not delete these. You can seek an administrator or arbitrators input on the matter. PeterZed 19:52, 28 December 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Your indication that you will delete the screenshot before the template matter has been resolved shows poor judgement. The matter is now one of international security and I expect it to remain.
