Paralympics?

[edit]

As he is so good, is there any information on the Paralympics expanding to cover visually impaired archery? -- 76.65.131.160 (talk) 18:36, 27 July 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Question re: actual vision

[edit]

Is his vision corrected or correctable to 20/200, or is that the uncorrected value? The article on legally blind says that if best corrected vision is 20/200, that's legally blind.

He is not legally blind according to Wikis article on blindness http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Legally_blind#Classification based on two criteria - his "best" eye is 20/100 and his worst eye (20/200) is uncorrected.

How do you get this fixed? — Preceding unsigned comment added by 184.144.18.139 (talk) 12:05, 30 July 2012 (UTC)[reply]

I agree with the person above. In addition, criteria for legal blindness differs from country to country. Wikipedia should reflect it's international audience, not just it's American audience. Ultimately I feel as though there is no value in stating that he's legally blind when his visual acuity has been stated. Perhaps we can also get a metric acuity measurement? — Preceding unsigned comment added by 121.220.138.105 (talk) 06:42, 31 July 2012 (UTC)[reply]

I am removing the legally blind remark from the article. There is no evidence to support that he is legally blind other than a misinformed remark in the header of a reuters article. He has 20/200 in his left eye, not in his right eye. In his dominant right eye he has 20/100. These number imply he is merely mildly myopic. He can correct his vision to 20/20 using glasses, but does not want to wear glasses. This does not qualify him as legally blind.--Votecoffee (talk) 18:34, 2 August 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Reliable source says he is?--Egghead06 (talk) 19:12, 2 August 2012 (UTC)[reply]

The reliable source is a magazine article, and it is wrong. You need to satisfy the definition of legally blind, and this has not been done.--70.174.110.172 (talk) 18:22, 4 August 2012 (UTC)[reply]

The reliable source is wrong???Reliables sources and verifiability are all we have on Wiki not individuals saying I don't like that or it's wrong!!!--Egghead06 (talk) 04:48, 5 August 2012 (UTC)[reply]

A Reuters article on a sporting event is probably not a reliable source regarding medical or legal definitions of blindess. "Each source must be carefully weighed to judge whether it is reliable for the statement being made and is the best such source for that context." — Preceding unsigned comment added by 204.227.241.38 (talk) 14:29, 9 August 2012 (UTC)[reply]

It does - the articles says he is legally blind, the source says he is legally blind. Is there a source to say he isn't?--Egghead06 (talk) 15:00, 9 August 2012 (UTC)[reply]
I get that. What I'm saying is that the source is not reliable for this particular fact. A source is not universally reliable, it is reliable only for those facts to which it is well-suited. Sportswriters don't have any relevant expertise regarding blindness. Moreover, the facts that are included in the article are inconsistent with the conclusion that Im is legally blind. If I find an article in a newspaper that states that the moon is 150,000km away from the Earth, that doesn't make it true. It is a verifiably incorrect statement. 204.227.241.38 (talk) 17:08, 10 August 2012 (UTC)[reply]
Here you go. http://msn.foxsports.com/olympics/archery/story/im-dong-hyun-archery-south-korea-world-record-is-he-really-legally-blind-072812 204.227.241.38 (talk) 17:13, 10 August 2012 (UTC)[reply]
As I say, all we have on Wiki are reliable sources. I have no knowledge as to his blindness other than those sources. You have one quoting him saying he is not legally blind - good! Seems like enough reason to remove this description.--Egghead06 (talk) 17:20, 10 August 2012 (UTC)[reply]
